I handed keys back over three years ago to my solicitor. I have been renting since then. I am now in a more stable situation and live with my partner. We would like to apply for a mortgage jointly but I am concerned that if we do the bank with begin chasing for money. Can you advise?

Yes, there is quite a reasonable chance that the lender will start chasing you a few months after you make any kind of credit application that shows you have some spare income.

Try to keep your own name off credit applications.
