greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

The French have decided that Paris lies along the Prime Meridian instead of Greenwich. Read about it here. http://news.bbc.co.uk/low/english/sci/tech/newsid_380000/380035.stm

Greenwich is still on the *English System* Prime Meridian, which uses degrees, hours, minutes, seconds, miles and feet and the standard units of measure.

Obviously, what they are refering to Paris being on the METRIC Prime Meridian. Of course, since no one in the world ever converted to the French-designed Metric Clock, their system of latitude and longitude based on metric measurements of distance and time never really caught on.

But now with the new "Internet time system" being pushed, I guess the French think they can slip in the Metric Prime Meridian, too. They'll probably try and get the UN to push this thing down everyone's throats by making some international treaty on global metrification and standardization.

And just when we thing we have problems with the GPS system under hand, we're probably going to have to try and re-program the things to work with 100 Metric Second minutes, 10 Metric Minute hours and 100 Metric Hour days.

I wonder how long before the French, anarchists that they are, try and do more damge with a Metric Calender with ten-day weeks, ten weeks to a month and ten months per year?

(Tongue way over in the cheek.) :<')
