The United States and its NATO allies have blocked Russia from flying hundreds of troops into Kovoso this weekend, before details of Russia's role in the NATO peacekeeping force could be worked out, Administration officials said Friday.

In the last 48 hours, Russia asked Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria for use of their airspace to fly 10 planeloads of peacekeepers on Sunday into Pristina, the provincial capital, the officials said. But those nations rejected the request after consulting with top American and NATO officials, the Administration officials said. Hungary is a new member of NATO, while both Romania and Bulgaria would like to join the alliance...

It was unclear exactly how many more troops Russian had intended to deploy, though American officials said it was at least a few hundred...

Two weeks after an agreement was reached in Helsinki, Russian military negotiators this week sought to alter it by having their troops in Kosovo report only to Russian officers, rather than be under the formal command of NATO. Russia also wants to station forces in the Italian, French, American and German sectors of Kosovo...

...When Russia signaled that it was preparing to send its troops to Kosovo anyway, American and NATO officials quickly intervened...

"The Russian planes were not on the runway ready to launch," a senior military official said, adding that nevertheless "calls were made to Hungary, Bulgaria and Romania to coordinate our response."

Uh Oh, here comes some more global "chicken" games. I still beleive that Russia will not allow NATO to totally control that area. And neither will the Chinese. So, if Russia moves in a few extra troups (compared to what NATO has there now) and this causes a confrontation or exchange, look out.
