While I KNOW it's a definite no-no, I'm gonna ask anyway. Has anyone ever REused canning jar lids sucessfully?

There is a small chance that sometime in the future we may run out of lids.

If anyone has had success reusing them I'd like to hear the tricks.

Obviously no one can guarentee anything here. This is try at your own risk stuff.

TIA

Greybear, that is one risk I don't want to take. However, I *do* re- use lids that have been processed for dry storage items that do not need to be 'dry canned' - storage of small quantities of rice, macaroni, etc. I also don't re-use lids that for whatever reason, didn't seal during the processing process. I use those for dry storage, too.

You can also 're-cycle' old, bent lids by using them as targets when honing one's shooting skills. : )

I've been doing a tremendous amount of canning (mostly meat and main dishes). For every lid I use in processing, I make it a point to replace it with at least 2 more.

Slightly off, but if you're reusing mayo jars for storage of dry things, using lid as template, cut a circle from a styro tray to replace the waxed cardboard liner you threw away. Gives the lids a snug fit.

Greybear, I concur. Never re-use a canning lid. The rubber seals are 'deformed' by the initial canning and will not re-form properly if used to can a second time.

Yes, but don't forget about buying REUSABLE lids. We got them through Cumberland.
