Vet Meds-Best Source?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

One of my dogs (the largest) has hip pain on occasion. The vet has given me prescription drugs for him - called Rimadyl, 100 mg. It does obviously cut the pain and I suppose it reduces inflammation also...VERY expensive. They quoted $75.95 for 100 tabs, and $179.95 for 250 tabs. He doesn't need this all the time - maybe once every 2 months he will need treatment. I cannot stand to see any animal in pain. Does anyone know of a source of this drug that isn't so expensive??? I certainly do appreciate any leads!!!

Rimadyl has a short but nasty history Jeanne. Particularly if your dog has Labrador in it I would stay away from Rimadyl. E-mail me & I'll fill you in.

BTW, your question pertains to Y2K in what way?

My question relates to y2k in that I am trying to stock up on the drugs that my husband, dogs, cat, cattle and chickens may need when the supply line goes to shit.

Fair enough Jeanne.

BTW, Rimadyl has caused the deaths of many, many dogs in the short time it has been on the market. Internal bleeding & liver damage are the two main routes it kills.

As I state to people everyday in reference to Y2K - do the research before you make a decision.

jeanne,

Rimadyl is a steroid, anti-inflamation drug...pretty strong stuff. We had a lab/dobe mix with hip dysplacia, which I am assuming you are talking about, and we gave her occasional pain medication, but it cost no where near the prices you quote above. Alot of alternate treatments are available for this crippler also. Beware that alot of them are indeed snake oil treatments.

If you know of any professional breeders of large dogs (Danes, Dobies, German Shepherds, etc.) in your area, consider calling some of them and seeking their advice on these treatments if your vet is unreceptive to alternate medical care.

Another source for pet medications/vaccines is the local feed and seed dealers. In our area, Southern States carries such products.

Here are some links that may help, some require a prescription from a veterinarian on drugs and vaccinations. Good luck.

This is a Link page for several different pet supplies/medication companies; and
