Communications Question

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) Preparation Forum : One Thread

I am sure this information is out there somewhere but I have only seen info on Motorola Talk-Abouts and CBs and Ham radios. Would a scanner do as far as "knowing what is going on" re: martial law, if it were to occur, roads being blocked, if that were to occur. What is a safe bet in this regard? In other words, if I don't want to speak to anyone,I just want the recent info.

Trust Me, you won't want to know!

Anyway, word of mouth will be enough for your local needs. Beyond that, if one is in the fight for their life, sticking your head out of your foxhole is not the prefered tactic for keeping it attached. Whom will you trust? Can they triangulate your position? What might their intentions be? Could you really *JUST LISTEN*?

Sorry, just having a *connect* day. I want to believe it going to be OK, but I know.... All these Pre-Y2K dates are a mirage, a smokescreen, it's just NOT going to be OK.

But you know, even that is acceptable, in it's own way, cause I'm ready for the worst and still hopin' for the best! {:^}`

NSmith,

A scanner would do want you want by enabling you to listen to police, rescue, etc. Word of mouth may work well if you live near lots of others, but we opted for a scanner because we live about 9 miles out of a mid-sized town which is 30 miles outside of a major city, and it's a major walk between neighbors. We may all be ignorant of what's going on in town! We can pick up both longer and longer-range tranmissions, but like you, are mainly interested in what's coming our way.

Others here will probably be able to offer a good bit of technical info.

We have had a scanner for years. In our small town, scanners are a major form of information and entertainment. We must all be a bunch of nosy old ladies cause we all want to know what is going on and who is involved. Two of our 4 scanners will run on 12 volts. We will keep listening to hear what is coming up I-5 from the south.
