Osteonecrosis of the hip

greenspun.com : LUSENET : About Joints : One Thread

Since osteonecrosis is related to the lack of blood to the site in question is there any correlation between lack of exercise, heavy cigarette smoking, steroids and alcohol to the extent of bone damage? Is there one of the above situations that is a usual cause, does a combination of two situations compound the effect.

There is no correlation between lack of exercise and Osteonecrosis (on). However, smoking, steroids and alcohol are all correlated with an increasing INCIDENCE of ON. there is also good epidemiological evidence that the INCIDENCE increases with combinations of the above. However there is no data correlating the EXTENT of the lesions and the above risk factors.
