The Canon product line lists two filters -- 500 and 500D -- in 77 mm size. What's the difference?

The 500D is a dual-element lens; much higher image quality than the single-element 500. The '500' refers to maximum working distance in mm.You may want to look at this discussion about Canon close-up options...
