What is the large pointed hat called that the Pope wears?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Catholic : One Thread

I was having a conversation with my mother about the Pope's hat. She said it was called a Mitre and I said it was called a Tiarra. Could you clarify this for me. Thank you.

Dear Joseph:

the hat the pope usually wears is called a MITER (it is the same as all bishops wear).

there is also the three-crown hat that is called TIARA. this was only used on the day the pope was "crowned" up to Paul VI. after that the tiara will not be in use.
