@#@#@#@ This is a Roll Call @#@#@#@

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

Its high time to renew the forum tradition of a stand up review of ALL those posting on this forum at this time.

I know some of you old timers find this boring. It does, however make an enormous difference in the lives of newbies and Semi-DWGIs. Without the torch that was carried by the original GIs many here would still have no clue as to the severity of y2k. In a word, its a debt.

For this I ask a complete Roll Call.

ROLL CALL (open) Rules:

My real name is Jonathan Carson. I sometimes question my sanity by participating here as often as I do (daily), but it more than fulfills my quotient of doom and gloom for the day. Here I hope to find inside information which will tell me one way or the other what level of preperation I need to be making. Currently I think It's going to end up between Yardeni and Yourdon's scenarios, with several weeks of acute problems in basic services and infrastructure, necessitating emergency actions/national guard on a local basis. As 00 drags on we face severe global recession.

On the other hand, things could get much worse if other global problems and conflicts spiral out of control; these include the worldwide liquidity crisis, a massive negative price loop from computer-hair-triggered securities trading, nuclear/chemical/bioweapon proliferation, the dwindling supply of readily-accessible oil, cracker attacks on critical infrastructure ("evil" hackers), asteroid attack, extraterrestrial invasion (okay, now THAT's just to make sure you're still awake ;) ), general millennial panic and zelous cults who WANT the world's end, etc.

Thanks to all for your response to this thread. As a guess Id put the number of responses at ~150 in 24 hours. Pretty impressive! If anyone here noticed that I wasnt around today that was because I was checking out the other Y2K forums on the net. Sad, very sad. In the 20 or so sites I visited not even 1 of them had 5% of the posts that this forum has in a single day. Imagine that! At some sites I found their most current post was late AprilGeeze!! TB2K had 150 responses to ONE thread in ONE day.

Now to the Debunker issue.

Anyone analyzing this post would come to the inascapable conclusion that we Doomers are professionals in our fields, and that its dominated by those in the broad range of IT. Funny isnt it, not one single answer to this RollCall admitted to being a malitia type. Well, maybe that is because WE ARE NOT!. Were just straight thinking workers that have assessed the potential problems and have decided it was in our best interest to prepare for the worst.

This should encourage all of you to keep doing what your doing, and keep in touch here at TB2K.

I have one final request (blind fold on) for ya all, lets send email to the moderators requesting they make this thread, or one similar to it available at the Top level. That way the new folks will have the opportunity to see the level of support this site garners. Its head and tails above the rest.

Done.

Uh...."Blind fold off"

I think Y2K will be a 10, and am trying to prepare for survival at a high technological level for up to a year or two, and a progressively lower level for up to a decade. I hope I'm wrong and it's not that bad (or that long). Unfortunately, I can't be sure of that, so the prudent approach is to prepare for the worst conceivable eventuality that I can possibly handle.

NO, say it isn't so!!! A teacher would 'fail' a student in art?

Tricia, grades are subjective, just as art is. You're in very, very good company!!! So many of the worlds masters were "failures" at the time they were creating. Of course, you'll have to perish some how to bring a monetary value to your work...so...stick around and just do it for the fun!!!
