Desperately looking for generator conversion kits

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) Preparation Forum : One Thread

First, thank all of you who responded to my question on gasoline storage, but I'm still not feeling comfortable storing that stuff. I know I read somewhere about conversion kits. Does anyone know where I could get these or have a URL for a company. I already checked out the Juice Page. None there. My next question is probably dumb, but I'd rather ask than stay dumb forever. Is diesel fuel the same thing as fuel oil that you would heat your home with...as in furnace? Karen

Answers

1) gas engines don't convert to deisel.

2) more or less, with a few additives and a bit cleaner

Karen,

If you're looking to convert from gas to propane or natural gas, you might try:

U.S. Carburetors, Inc..

Gas to diesel, sorry.

The real question you want to ask is, "Can you run a diesel engine on heating oil?" Yes, it's not a problem. Just don't get caught running a diesel truck or car on the stuff --- the fine is significant.

Last winter, when my family ran out of heating oil, the operator at the oil company said I could pour 5 gallons of diesel into the tank to "tide us over" til the next day delivery. The only difference is the red dye.

That said, there is a tax on heating oil that is not placed on diesel, so the government considers heating with diesel to be "cheating" them out of the tax revenue, so be judicious.

Copycat,

I think you have that backwards. Diesel has a 'road tax', home heating oil doesn't.
