Meaning of "doula" word?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Doula.Com General Discussion : One Thread

Is the word Doula an acronym (D.O.U.L.A.)? If so, what does it stand for? If it is not an acronym, is it a foreign word that means "support" or "with woman", something like that? This may seem like a really silly question. I appreciate your help. The word is not in any of my dictionaries or in the encyclopedia.

Hi Lisa, The word doula comes from the greek language. It literally means hand maiden or servant, I like the defination, Mother of the Mother. As a doula that is exactly what we do, Mother the Mother. Hope this helps
