pea sheller

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

I noticed you had an issue that gave instructions on building a pea sheller...which one was it? As I see it now when I show my wife your site and your magazine we will most likely start a subscription. I had an first issue of the mother earth news that was ripped off by some one,it was very helpful on our farm. Thank You

You might want to reconsider putting much effort into a pea sheller if you are just shelling peas for yourself. We bought a "Mr Pea Sheller" a few years ago and used it dilligently for our peas- about 10 litres of shelled peas a year. It worked using a drill for power and you sat and put the pods into it. We had a friend over one day and he thought it would be just as fast to shell peas by hand- the old way. We had a race and sure enough, the machine was not any faster than a person just working away at a normal speed by hand. As well, the peas shelled by the machine often got squashed and it squeezed the juice out of the pods. The result was a much messier batch of peas than those done by hand which were absolutely clean. We have not used Mr. Pea Sheller for years now and prefer to sit on the porch in the evening shelling peas by hand and shooting the breeze.
