Mylar Bags ?? Gamma Lids ?? Where & how ??

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) Preparation Forum : One Thread

OK, I've read some about the mylar bags and how good they are, where do you get them ?? Also heard about the gamma lids for my 5 gallon buckets of beans & rice, are they that much better than a knock on lid with a rubber seal ?? Thanks for the help, Charles

Those gama lids look cool, and probably work real well too.

Problem is that I last saw them listed at $7.00 each.

Shipping is extra.

Got cash?

Gamma lids are certainly convienient if you are going to be repeatedly opening and closing a bucket. Repeatedly prying open and hammering closed a regular lid is a bother, and sooner of later you (or your kids) might get careless and not close one completely. That's when the bugs or moisture get in....

Also I wonder if regular lids seal well after they've been pryed open several times.

Biker,

Because of that problem, I chose to vacume pack all dry goods, Then use containers for bulk storage. Don't need rubber seals or spendy lids, just a cat or two.

I bought mylar sheets from a plastic specialty store called TAP. It comes in a roll, so I can get as much or little as I like. It does require me to use the iron to make the seams, but the cost is well worth the effort.

I also couldn't resist the opportunity to buy a few mylar water bags, circa Desert Storm, from the Army Navy Surplus Store. They come complete with valve, 3 ea. for $5.00 Somewhere between 20 and 30 liters capacity.

Gamma lids are the best! I have them on things I use often; protein powder, cat food, some kinds of beans I make for church suppers, popcorn. If you have chickens, they keep out rodents but kids can open the lids to feed the chickens.

My friend Stephen say the neat whooshing sound they make when you open or close them was engineered in; it sounds like something in a submarine movie! ( Close the hatches men, dive! Dive! Aaaauuuugah!)

Alright, why can't I enjoy myself?!

I got all my buckets and gamma lids from www.USPlastics.com Before you purchase a lot of buckets, look at their Vittle Vaults. They have even a better gamma lid. They are much larger and hold 60 # of dog food, 75# of cat food and about 90# of rabbit feed. They are both AIR TIGHT AND WATER TIGHT. I wish now that I had gone to mostly these vaults. Instead of having several buckets of rice, it would be all in one place. Also these units are square and one can stack a whole lot more of them in an area than in buckets. They too are available at US Plastics. So do look at them before buying any buckets. I am thinking of getting more and then taking the buckets out to the shop and storing the chicken feed and other critter feeds in the buckets with the gamma lids. I am in need of space in the house.
