Hand-dug railroad well

greenspun.com : LUSENET : ACL and SAL Railroads Historical Society : One Thread

Does anyone know of any hand-dug railroad wells in existence? We have one in Wichita County, Kansas dug in 1887, it's 24' dia. and 102'deep. We would like to know if we can rightfully say it is the only one left in the country. Would appreciate any responses!

Your 110 ft. well is perhaps the deepest if not the only remaining well in use. The Atlantic Coast Line hand-dug well (circa 1900) on the former Drewry's Bluff camp is now filled with debri and only a four ft. deep depression in the ground. I am considering reopening for irrigation purposes.
