I am intrested in the rail depot in Selma, NC. Looking for any information about its history. Also, would like to know why it has been on an historical registry since 1982 and it still sits deteriorating. Thanks ahead of time for anyones help.

Selma Depot is scheduled for opening October 2002. The old ACL freight depot c. 1886 and and old NCRR/SRR/NSRR Depot / freight depot c. 1855 are both being studied for restoration.

Thought you might want to know that the Selma Union Station went out to bid this week for a total restoration to be completed by the summer of 2002. I am the architect working on this station and the Cape Fear and Yadkin Valley Depot in Fayetteville. Still needed on Selma is photo confirmation of an early red clay tile roof. Any historical information on either station would be appreciated.

Just curious to know if the powers that be included the board and batten freight house located 100 yards to the north of the brick passenger depot on the historical registry. While not as pretty as the brick station, the wooden structure is the original ACL Selma combination (pass/freight) depot and is therefore the older of the two buildings.

I have heard that renovating the station will be more costly than originally planned due to environmental concerns (lead paint and possibly asbestos). The state of North Carolina will get to it, eventually.
