Prediction:

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

On September 23 will mark 99 days until 2000. I "predict" that many that are snoozing will wake up and the media will rise to the occasion with stories. Buying sprees and selling sprees too!

(discounting that nothing happens before that date)

I disagree. I think all the evidence points to the fact that we are essentially flying on autopilot. Several groups and organizations are claiming 'readiness'/'compliance', etc. For what it's worth, I suspect that at least some portion of those claims are dubious at best.

But my suspicions are not shared by large numbers of people. The public at large has already chosen not to give much credence to the possibility of major disruptions. The time for serious preparations is all but gone. For better or worse we are going in to this situation both unprepared and unconcerned.

Unless and until there is a major disruption/inconvenience/event that is clearly and unabiguously linked to large Y2K-related failure, and which has direct and immediate impact on large numbers of people, there will be neither panic nor much additional preparation. For the former, I'm grateful. As for the latter, I'm hoping my concern turns out to have been unnecessary.

The lack of concern is a double-edged sword. If very little happens, then it served our society well. But should disruptions be anything more than isolated events, the sword will swing the other way.

My personal opinion, again FWIW, is that more should have been done. But that's water under the bridge at this late date. If we can laugh at my personal opinion 6-8 months from now, it will be a very good day.

dw-St. Francis keeps having headaches, maybe he can shed some light on this. See the thread "The earth will move in great force in 10 days."

I agree that it's way late in the game to get it, freak out, learn about self-reliance and prep (xcept for the richer ones), but I was only "predicting" a date of possible mass awakening.

Mass awakening? In September? No way. The sheeple will continue to slumber until late November or even into December.

ARNIE RIMMER:

Happened to be in IA City not to long ago, and noticed that Hills (sp?) Bank was installing a generator. Whaddaya think of that?

This is not a prediction

December 29th at the earliest. Denial runs deep.....

I started prepping hard the end of 1998 because I believe that as we entered 1999 and there was less than a year left, that the media would focus on this issue and public awareness would skyrocket. Indeed, there was a flurry of press at the beginning of the year, but then the PR campaign kicked into high gear. There was another, smaller burst of activity at we approached the last six months. I can see the start of the last 100 days as being another milestone, but probably even quieter than the former.

"Better late than never?"

Or "Is it too late?"

Or "How do you feel about bending over?"

Anyway you put it things won't be pretty.

Come on Folks! You can't expect our beloved national media to report on something as humdrum as Y2K when there is Monica, Billy, Hilary and (gasp!!) the possiblity that George Jr. might have taken something recreational. After all, on NBC tonight, the devastating earthquake in Turkey got a total of 1 minute and 15 seconds (a long time on nat. tv). It probably will kill only about 35,000 or so and y2k may (I said MAY dang it) kill a lot more than that. (Truly, it may kill off a lot of us doomers with food boredom if its a BITR....but I'll chance that).

The majority (85-90%) of the US population will refuse to recognise that anything can go wrong until about Christmas. The others will be long time ready.

For the last time - we are living in a dictatorship - the media is NOT free - there will be no panic, y2k will hit like a juggernaut...

Andy's right, with the exception of sex and sex related matters on the news. I nearly choked on my beverage when I heard Gennifer Flowers being interviewed on Fox News last night saying that Hillary Clinton is bi-sexual, and Billy boy didn't mind. Sorta gives credence to the Cathy O'Brien story about Hillary.

Sign 'o the times, folks.
