By their own definition then, it was "right-wing" extremists who are responsible for raising the awareness of the entire planet of the Y2K problem. As I recall, it was not the Navy that started preaching Y2K to the world. It was people like Jim Lord, Rick Cowles, etc. "Total failure likely" is their words, not Lord's. As far as I am concerned, this administration burned up the "right-wing" crap with Monica. Remember Hillary? Its tired, old, been there- done that.

I sincerely hope that the Baton Rouge Authorities were wrong in their guess as to why the Navy wasn't responded to. It would indicate a very slip-slod way of researching vital information for assessment and planning. If an E-4 was resposible for getting the info as someone thought could happen then someone needs to teach management in a very quick fashion.

Well, so far you guys have missed it. The big story here is that a Naval spokesman - a U.S. Navy Captain no less - is casting political aspersions, by describing Lord as a "right-wing" extremist and by extension, everyone who's participated in the discussion about this matter as "right-wing extremists." Dare I suggest that everyone involved in the Y2K issue is not right-wing? Might Y2K concerns involve a fair number of Libertarians, Democrats, Independents and tree huggers, etc. The Navy (like all of our military) is supposed to be completely apolitical. Left-wing, right-wing, buffalo wings... Maybe this is a clue as to why the Founders were so opposed to standing armies? Captain Szafran needs to be taken down a peg or two. I think I'll write a letter to the Advocate.

And THIS is the REALLY important aspect of the Navy report fiasco: WHAT IT POTENTIALLY SAYS. Look, if it were August of 1997, this would not be such a big deal. To be just a hair over four months away from Jan 1 and to has such mass confusion everywhere -- the Navy, the local utilities, etc. -- is in itself the BIG issue. And why "Hope for the best, prepare for the worst" was never truer.

I noticed that also, but, in all honesty, this article was so full of crud in each and every paragraph, I just didn't know where to begin. It had ME spinning. Still does. I wonder if the lack of attendence in this thread has anything to do with 'GI Sheeple Posterior Pucker'. I certainly hope not, or we'll be in bigger trouble than even I have imagined. Come to think of it, I have over-estimated the abilities of JQP for the past year. It's been the primary factor that has moved me steadily up the scale from a 5 to a full-blown 10!
