GPS turn over?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

Will the 24 orbiting satilites reset to zero at the same time or will they reset at 8pm. eastern or western time? What about the GPS satilites that are not in our hemisphere? Will the Australian positioned satilite change over before the western satilites? If so, this has already happened yesterday and if so, the eastern positioned satilites have change over 30 min. ago. My communications are still up and running!

GPS rollover is done at midnite UTC.

I am glad there werent any problems.

But it won't stop me from preparing for an emergency situation which I can (Y2K) or cannot (nature) see.

Just as with the MCI frame relay failures it will take two days to know the score.

Lea, the time references are uniform.

My lights are on, I'm happy.

Most people that state the words "get a life", lack one. Why do you hang around these circles if you feel you have a life? UUMMMM? We are all watching this with a grain of salt. You better stay tuned, hold your tongue/words and be smart about this.

Lea,

As Tom wrote, all the satellites use the same time reference, so all rollover their week counter at the same instant.

The GPS satellites are not in geosynchronous orbits. They don't stay over the same spot on Earth all the time. Their orbits were planned so that three or more would be above the horizon at any time no matter where you are, but it wouldn't be the same three all the time.

LOOKS minor so far, but we cannot get time from the phone company any more. This might or might not be much of a loss...

Ha Ha

No Spam, why bother teaching these guys about geo satellites? They wouldn't understand but they "see" the interconnectedness.

Maria,

It's a hobby.

... and it's a mistake to lump all of "them" into the same category.
