Found the elusive "Strike Anywhere" Matches

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) Preparation Forum : One Thread

Hello, all:

For those looking for the strike anywhere type of match thats been in short supply this past year, I noticed some at a local Food Lion grocery store. Funny thing was, they arent the blue box I expected. In a dark red and blue box, Fire Chief brand, 3 boxes of 250 matches, for about $2.29 a pack IIRC.In the section where they keep the barbque supplies. HTH

I also have found them at a funky Ace hardware store in a small town near me. They knew that many do not carry them, but they said they just oder them from Ace and have no trouble getting them. They said that any Ace should be able to oder them for a customer.

Try Menards for those who have one nearby.

$.99 for two boxes of 250, last I saw. On clearance now.

My local restaurant supply house/grocery wholesaler had them in stock, the big "kitchen" size and the small pocket size boxes. They had Blue Diamond brand, fwiw. Check in your yellow pages under GROCERS- WHOLESALE or RESTAURANT EQUIPMENT AND SUPPLIES and give the businesses listed a call or a visit. You might be surprised at what else you find that's useful.

Those are illegal where I live. Why do you people want such dangerous items?

Leave it to Greybear to come along and rain on everybody's parade:

It took me a few minutes to quit laughing at the idea of exploding matches.

For eight years I carried, hanging around my neck on a string, a metal match safe filled with strike anywhere matches. I have carried the same match safe in a coat or pants pocket for another 10 years. My activiites during that period included running, jumping, fishing, hunting, flying airplanes, carpentry, touch football, etc. Many activities involving moving, jiggling, shaking, pounding and generally moving the matches in short rapid movements.

Not ONE single "explosion". Not ONE single unintended strike.

I did fall on the dam match safe once and bruise my chest. Does that count as dangerous use of matches?

Folks, you need to investigate the materials you are talking about.

Oh yeah, forgot, for Retroman:

I "want" the "dangerous" things to start a fire with.
