Peoples concern determines the effects of computer code

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

Hi all. Just watched the channel 5 Eyewitness News(ABC affiliate) here in MN. Today is Y2K Wed. That's what the anchors said(cool a phony balony y2k story every wed.)

Today's topic: What to do about your investment's for y2k. Guess who they had as their "expert" to answer that perplexing question? Your absoloutly right! Rich Johnson, who is with Piper Jaffery-Citicorp bank. No conflict of interests there.

First question: Is y2k an issue to be concerned about or is it more people's reaction that might cause problem's? I bet you can't guess what dick's answer was(for the newbies out there, his answer was: peoples reactions). Then they started showing those cute graphics, for your investment "strategy" during y2k. There were only 2 catagories, and get this. They said that, if you FEEL unconcerned about y2k you should "stay the course". The second option was, if you FEEL concerned about y2k, you should get "defensive" with your investment's.

There you have it, the straight dope from Dick Johnson. The effect's and severity of y2k on your investment's is exclusively dependent on your feelings on the subject. This dribble is borderline criminal, both the news station (KSTP) and Mr. Johnson should get their feet to the fire on this one. Have a nice day!

What's really scary is that the general population buys into this bullshit. "I saw it on the news so it has to be true"

The push is on to keep the sheep quiet so there is a steady supply of lambchops for the bankers to enjoy. I sense a certain frantic tone to these pronouncements; these boys are scared. My banker admits there is no way for his bank to screen out bad data without destroying the banking system, so if there is Y2K-corrupt data floating around in January, which I believe to be impossible to avoid, the banking system will be stone dead at that time.

A prudent man will protect his assets by turning them into cash and hide it until spring.

Cygnus- Nice to see a fellow Minnesotan here! Didn't know our news had such great comic value. My despair is such that I have considered passing out educational fliers at the Wal-Mart. But I'm sure someone would ruin my day by calling me a communist
