Y2K to cause increased travel risk and political stresses

Foreign workers and expatriates are often times at greater risk in times of political stress. Y2K could pose extra security burdens on firms and their staffs.

The map above, indicates higher risk countries with darker shades. White countries indicate areas where an accurate assessment was not feasible.

Y2K poses special challenges to firms or individuals operating in foreign countries. During times of political stress, foreign entities and individuals are often times the focal point for frustration and anger. Y2K risks run from annoyances for these individuals to serious health and safety risks.

International Monitoring has assessed the Y2K risk and damage profile of 140 countries in its IM-Y2K Risk Rating Report.

International Monitoring has access to the ICRG current political risk data from its partnership with The PRS Group. The political risk information sets can be combined with the IM-Y2K risk rating to come up with projections for future political and security risks due to Y2K.

International Monitoring has taken the reciprocal of the ICRG rating and multiplied it by the IM-Y2K risk rating of 112 countries. These countries were then broken down into 4 groups. The exact nature of the political risk related to Y2K events is impossible to predict. The potential scale of such stresses can be projected. The table below indicates the 112 countries broken down into 4 risk groups.

No exact definition or distinction is made for low, medium, high or extreme risk. Corporate risk managers need to assess the current risk profile and the projected Y2K related stresses to assess the relevant action for expatriate staff. The data is provided so that firms and travellers may assess country profiles relative to one and other.

The risks listed below are not specific Y2K risks, but a combination of current political risk and projected Y2K related stresses.

Those firms needing to see the detailed profile of Y2K damage projections in terms of cost and infrastructure failure may do so by purchasing the IM-Y2K report. The current political risk rating is provided in the reports as well.

International Monitoring is a specialist consultancy based in London. They assess the technology infrastructure of countries, the efficiency of Y2K fixes, and estimates of the lateness of certain fixes. These analyses are then used to calculate economic damages and probable Y2K scenarios.

The results are used by those conducting business internationally or those concerned with international risk. For more information visit International Monitoring's web site at www.intl-monitoring.com and download a product brochure
