Natural gas question

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) Preparation Forum : One Thread

My father, who is not as prepared as I wish, called the gas utility and ask them about the gas supply. The guy told him that even if power went off that the gas lines are GRAVITY flow and he would still have gas. How do I counter this? Has anyone ever seen an elevated natural gas tank? What kind of stupidity says these kinds of things?

I'll check back later for responses.

Thanks,

NG *IS* naturally pressurized coming from the ground. HOWEVER< there are pumps and SCADA systems required to move the gas into the neighborhood. As one NG engineer said: "no electricity, no gas."

I installed a 500 gallon propane tank (rented; $200/year. fillup cost was $0.62/gallon) in the back yard to backup my NG supply. Get a furnace conversion kit (different jets; pretty cheap) and you're good to go.

Gee, I am glad to know that, since Florida is at the bottom of the map we should get all kinds of gas. And that person WORKS for the gas company? Thats about as bright as the women who was asking me about going to Australia. She wanted to know how I got there. I told her I flew. She said, she was scared of flying, that she would have to take the bus!!!!!!!!! The salt of the earth, ....but Taz is on a low sodium diet.
