Kero Heaters back at Home Depot

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) Preparation Forum : One Thread

After waiting all summer I just spotted Kero-Sun heaters in our home depot. Didnt see any on Wednesday and now there were three by the door. Bought a Omni-105 for $149 and while I was waiting on line someone else was eyeing the others. Wonder how fast before they sell out.

If you were waiting for a Kero heater check your Home Depot now !

Stasher,

Could you please post back with how many btu's for the Omni-105? Also, how many hours does it heat on one fill and what is the number of gallons per fill?

Were any other Kero Sun models available or are they only stocking this one?

Thanks.

On a related point-- does anyone here know the freezing point of kerosene?

The Kero-Sun holds just under 2 gallons of kerosene and burns at 23,000 btu. Claims to do 12-16 hours depending on quality of kero and ambient temps. That part I dont get, but I am new to kero heaters.

They havent had a single heater here since last winter and suddenly three of the same heaters were on the floor. Couldnt have been here more than 2 or 3 days. I bought one, quite a big orange and white box. Probably weighs 40 pounds but I am big and very tall so weights are confusing to me.

I already have various propane heater heads but wanted a kero heater because I dont know what will happen with fuel supplies.

Also bought an assortment of bug killers, mouse traps/poisons and flea/fly traps.

As far as Kero freezing I've never had it happen (stored in gargage at -10. Have had different brands/output heaters over the years, all worked good.. So use K1 Kreosene (don't know as if there is a differance as to the CLEAR or the RED types). One thing buy EXTRA WICKS! These can be bought at Miejers, or a Large Hardware (seems like Home Depot will carry the Heaters but not the Wicks, Go Figure)! About 1 Wick a Year is the recomended use but Buy MORE as this is the only part you can't (or would'ent want to try to)make.

I use k1, mix 50-50 with heating oil. I use this in my forced air heater, the K1 keeps the fuel oil from jelling at -40f. Truckers use K1 in fuel as an anti jell in cold weather.

My local Home Depot just got the Kero-Sun Omni 105 models in also. In addition, they had a sign above them saying "Prepare for Y2k"

Has anyone heard of Dura Heat? Are these the same as Kero-Sun?

(I called the closest home depot (2 hour drive) and when I asked about kerosene heaters I found out that they have them in, but they're not out on the floors yet. When I asked what the brand was they said "Dura Heat." )

Went back to HomeDepot today (several days after buying my Omni 105 and the remaining 2 heaters are still there (same boxes). Junk piled on top of them.

Bought 6 of those neat blue 5-gallon plastic KEROSENE cans which fit evenly in my car trunk.
