Hong Kong issues Y2K warning to ships NEWSBYTES

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hong Kong's Marine Department has issued a warning to ships using the SAR's busy harbour that they need to declare Y2K compliance or stay out this Thursday, September 9. The day has been singled out as a possible problem day for old computer systems which could interpret the 9/9/99 date as a command to end a program.

Although the problem is only present on systems using old computer code, the date has been flagged around the world as a potentially problematic day.

The Marine Department has announced plans to introduce "special port operations procedures" from 8pm on Wednesday, September 8, to 8pm on September 9 to ensure to day goes off without a hitch.

"All vessels entering, leaving or moving within Hong Kong waters during that 24-hour period have to observe the Y2K Code of Good Practice and to provide Marine Department with the relevant information about their status of Y2K readiness," a spokesman for the department said.

"Vessels which have not submitted the required information as outlined in the questionnaire must declare their Y2K readiness before permission is given to enter or leave Hong Kong during that 24-hour period," he said.

"Any vessel which is unable to confirm Y2K compliance or readiness may not be allowed to enter, depart or move within Hong Kong waters, or they may be required to employ escort tugs if permission is given, depending on the circumstances," he added.

People that have to work in the open ocean are pretty pratical..

At least they are doing the prudent thing.
