Fireplace smoke inviting...

Is there anyway to filter my fireplace chimney so that the sweet smell of burning wood and stew doesn't go wafting through my neighborhood announcing to one and all that we are warm and eating? I know it's a long shot..but...??

Here is an idea, make a screen sandwich out of crushed charcoal and place over your chimney. Could work, but I am thinking this or any other device will probably slow down the draft and put smoke back into your home without a fan to draw the smoke out. In my area everyone has a fireplace or wood stove so I am not too worried about smoke being seen, but the food odor is something I have often thought about.

How about a furnace filter? You know, the loose-woven fiberglass stuff? It'll let the air pass, but traps lots of "stuff".
