Berkefeld filter question

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) Preparation Forum : One Thread

I just received my Berkefeld filter and am "conditioning" the filters as instructed. It took about 5 hours to filter a complete tank full on two filters. This seems longer than expected. Does anyone know if this is normal or will they speed up once conditioned? Or is the answer to speed increase just to put in the other two filters and run it with 4? Thanks in advance for any response.

Speed through the filter depends on the hydraulic "head" you have. To get an INTERESTING perspective go over to www.pwgazette.com (or maybe another "z" or not another "t") and read what he has and does and then order the 8 or10 dollar syphon system as you now have 4 filters.

After conditioning my Berky, it took about 3 1/2 hours to fill the lower tank. My thought was I would keep the bottom tank drained into storage containers and just keep adding to the top. I also bought several of the siphons and extra filters in case more water is needed under differing circumstances. I also intend to give siphons and filters to my DGI family, very cost effective! ;->

Ummmmmm, am I doing something wrong? My Berkefeld fills the lower tank in 30 minutes (or less). That is 2 gallons through 4 filters.

The second batch went much faster. This is with only two of the filter hooked up. I may go to all four.

I just wanted to say that I had a good experience with www.pwgazette.com (Pure Water Gazette), ordered extra filters for my Big Berkey, got great service via Internet on-line ordering, and fast delivery. Couldn't beat the price, either.

There is one thing you might look at if you think your Berky is working too fast. If the "candles" are not securely fastened, then water might leak at the bottom and not go through the ceramic filters.

Try about 3/8" of water in the bottom -- just below the junction of the black base and the white ceramic filter. Leave it set for a day. If you're still getting water through then your filter is being bypassed and any nasties in the top tank will get through to the bottom tank.

Just a thought.
