Wisconsin drivers hitting plate snafus

No license stickers, late notices cause problems for motorists

News-Tribune

Wisconsin motorists may have received their renewal certificate this month without the sticker for their license plates. Others who must renew their registration in September may have gotten their notice late.

Before the errors were detected, 11,000 people who renewed their license plates last month were sent their registration certificate without the annual sticker for their plates. Roughly 18,000 of the 367,000 renewal notices that should have been sent out by the end of August were mailed this week.

If a motorist has paid the renewal fee and is stopped before receiving the sticker, law enforcement will know they have renewed their registration because the information is entered on the Department of Motor Vehicles' computer system, said Paul Bernanader, head of the special unit for WisDOT.

Motorists who did not receive a sticker with their registration renewal certificate can get one by e-mailing bur-veh-services.dmv@dot.state.wi.us or calling (608) 266-1466 from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday to Friday. They can also go to a DMV customer service center to get the sticker. Bernander said motorists won't be charged the counter fee to pick up the sticker.

Wisconsin residents who did not receive renewal notices yet are encouraged to renew by mail, phone, Internet or in person at a DMV office as soon as possible. The end of the month is usually very busy.

Wisconsin Department of Transportation officials said the errors resulted as new staffers were being trained on high-speed mailing machines.

FWIW, I do not know how old the underlying story is, but the report that Homer posted is dated today at the Duluth News site.
