Homemade laundry soap has saved me a lot of money

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) Preparation Forum : One Thread

A few months ago Nancy P posted a recipe for making homemade laundry soap. I tried it and that is all I have been using since. I figured it has saved me over $100. My clothes are softer and smell great. I have made a few adjustments to the recipe to fit my needs for example: my soap is a little more concentrated because I use a smaller container that holds less water than the recipe calls for. I use any brand of bar soap but Ivory has less irritants in it for sensitive skin people. I use an old soup ladle in my bucket as a scoop. I can't imagine why everyone is not using this recipe. It is so easy to make and cheap. Here is the link to the original post: http://www.greenspun.com/bboard/q-and-a-fetch-msg.tcl?msg_id=0014jA Thank you Nancy P.

I forgot to add, I was doing laundry for six adults and five children during last few months, and the $ savings were for real.

Me too Carol. Living on a very limited budget these days and the soap receipe has been a real blessing in our lives - for months. If I recall I found the receipe on one of the Frugal Living sites. It is so easy and the cost is very little. The money saved has helped in our costs of preparation. I also have found other ways to save. I now purchase the very large box of baking soda at Costco ....I use it for all kinds of cleaning and find it superior to all the fancy and expensive cleaners. I also fill small dispensers with Costcos antibacterial dish soap and leave one by every sink....it is wonderful for hand washing and no more soap bars wasting away in soap dishes. Salvation Army or Goodwill is a great source for some very pretty dispensers. I find the Frugal Living web sites really have alot of information that is useful and have saved many dollars by using the ideas people have shared. Old Gramma

Here is hint I have been using. I add plain ole rubbing alcohol to the cheapest liquid soap I can buy and Wa La, germ killing soap for pennies.

Carol, I have been thinking that I need some kind of bar soap to use on a wash board in a big galvanized tub. What you are talking about is a liquid that you are using in the washing machine, isn't it? Is there a good soap for the wash board? I remember my Mammaw stiring sheets around in a big iron pot on a fire. That isn't in my plans right now!
