Have CD's about to rollover....where would YOU put your money?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

Okay, got a non-believer hubby who wants to plow it into the stock market. I've told him NO! I think I've convinced him that there will be at least a slight "dip" at the turn of the millennium.....sigh...yeah , sure, a slight DIP! Okay, now what? The certificates of deposit are coming due to be renewed or reinvested....Where can I convince him to put those? Will it be safe to reinvest in the CD's? Recall, we are overseas and cannot buy the house we have been saving for at this point....I am concerned that y2k will wipe us out and we'll never be able to do this... Any and all advice welcome...

5-10% into survival-oriented preps-food/gear/tools/guns if available 5% into precious metals-take possession of same 5%-possibly-into tangibles-transportable wealth like gems/rare coins 15-20% into food and natural resources stocks (oil stocks with large U.S. domestic reserves?)(get a certified/notarized audit of your acct.) 15-25%-cash instruments (esp. Amex/Barclay trav cks in Kroner/DeutschM/SwissFr/Guilders/U.S. dollars) and cash 50% in 90 day U.S. T-Bills-or other direct obligations of the U.S. government. If the local infastructure goes toes up are you ready to run?

I would ^^puts on Andy Hat^^

Probably double this to 10-20%
5% into precious metals-take possession of same

probably push this to 10-15
5%-possibly-into tangibles-transportable wealth like gems/rare coins

15-20% into food and natural resources stocks (oil stocks with large U.S. domestic reserves?)
Recommend more gold mining than food stocks as the food co's are first on the list (behind oils) for nationalization, which makes the stocks useful for neat looking (digital) wallpaper if you actually get delivery
(get a certified/notarized audit of your acct.)

MOST DEFINITELY!!

15-25%-cash instruments (esp. Amex/Barclay trav cks in Kroner/DeutschM/SwissFr/Guilders/U.S. dollars)

This is cool but doin't bother with the US$, think AUS$, etc.
and cash 50% in 90 day U.S. T-Bills-or other direct obligations of the U.S. government.
If the percentages don't add up, slide according to taste.

Make sure htat your running equipment has small and large denominations of silver and gold (.1, .25, .5 oz gold eagles if you are departing from a US location), junk silver quarters and halves, and .999 fine 1 oz silver rounds or commemoratives rectangles. Never know what you need to bribe with and DON'T want to have to over-pay the baksheesh, you tend to become a target that way.

OH BTW DON'T carry the portable wealth and teh metals in teh same place and MAKE SURE that you NEVER show MORE than a couple coins in ANY denomination.

(And just my NTBHO, the travelers checks are PROBABLY worth a LOT LESS than a few more coins, as the TChecks are TRULY someon's promise to pay)

Chuck ^^removes Andy Hat and is AMAZED at the comfort of the fit^^

OY VEY!!

Sewing your coins into the hems/linings of your clothes may have worked somewhat before metal detectors and x-ray machines. Now we're screwed. U.S. government routinely grabs cash, guns, and other property inside the U.S. and at borders -- coming in or going out.

One of my fantasies (which I don't have the expertise to do, unfortunately) is to have a small radio controlled model airplane or blimp with a good load capacity to transport small "precious" items across contiguous borders. Of course from the U.S., the only destinations are Canada and Mexico.
