Why are the houses in many parts of San Francisco, e.g. Noe Valley, built so close together?

The high price of land. Many houses in Noe Valley, Bernal Height, Glen Park etc started out as small houses with plots of land in front and on the sides. Through the years they have been extended to the street and widened to the lot's edge.
