My 'fish' medicine arrived today

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) Preparation Forum : One Thread

I ordered the pencillin and amoxicillin from this site: Http://www.lambriarvet.com/catalog/antibiotics1.htm#top The people at this site are very efficient and a nice saleslady called me to confirm my order. I received my order in three days by mail. The shipping was under $4.

The amoxicillin has an expiration date of 2002 and the penicillin 2001. I feel better knowing that I have some kind of medical insurance in my pantry. I have a feeling that many of the sites that sell the fish medicines will be out of stock soon.

They also have fish antibiotics at Pets Mart. I got some Tetracycline and a sulfa drug. It was about $4 for a packet of 10.

How much of the fish antibiotics do you have to buy to get the equivalent of a human 10 day supply (the usual length of time for which antibiotics are prescribed)?

-- Libby Alexander (libbyalex@aol.com), October 07, 1999.

The pills are 250 mg per pill. That is four doses per day for the average adult. Look at an old prescription bottle, if your dosage is 500 than take two pills. I just received a Doctor's prescription for Amoxicilin for a tooth infection that is 250 per pill and says to take 1 pill 4x in 24 hours for 10 days. I asked my pharmicist about these fish pills and he said professionaly he could not recommend them, but as a friend yes, they were okay. I just want them to use in case of no doctor or pharmacy available. I will certainly go to the doctor first if I can.

I stood in front of the fish antibiotics at Petsmart for about 20 minutes one day and left without buying any. That disclaimer "Not for human use" made me too nervous. Nice to hear a pharmacist said they're OK. Will probably buy some now for emergencies only. Thanks.

Clipped the following from the Drs. Foster & Smith catalogue site. Have bene ordering from them for many years, very reliable. There are injectable antibiotics for horses too, as well as suture kits, pet first aid kits, and other useful (and fun) items.

Thanks, Lily! I tried hotlinking once but made a mess of it. Must try again at some point.

My husband also ordered the fish medicine from Lambriar. My husband & 19 year old son have already had to use some of the penicillin (I think they used the amoxicillin). It worked great! They had no side effects (didn't grow any fins or anything :)) and they got over being sick in no time. We not only saved money by not having to go to the doctor, but also didn't have to get a presciption (we have a $10.00 co-pay). This was cheaper & worked just as well - no difference. Just be sure you have a good book that will help you diagnose your symptoms so you know what to take & how much.

I have a win-win deal with my vet. I buy & stockpile meds etc from him at his cost. If nothing happens next year, he comes to me first to 'shop' for meds etc at his 1999 prices.
