And most of all, only point a gun at something you intend to shoot. Period.

Sorry Zoob, my philosophy is to aim at the center of the target no matter what it is. If you shoot to stop and you aim somewhere other than the center of the target you may miss, and then your life may be in danger. Always aim at the center.... less chance of a miss.

Zoobie you ever been around a wounded animal? Thats the most dangerous kind. All those hormones rushing and out of control.

If anybody aims a gun at me they better kill me cause when I get up I'm gonna kill them. Period!

-- David Lee Roth (Diver Down@Van Halen.ou812), October 07, 1999.

Zoobie,

Shoot to stop, don't shoot to kill.

Gotta disagree. A guy on the ground can still shoot at you or even disarm you when you go over to check him out. Also, he can sue you in civil court where it's your word against his (and remember, he's the one who got shot). Do you really want to make disability payments to him for the rest your life? If he's dead, it's just your word. Don't shoot unless you intend to kill.

Dog,

Sorry Zoob, my philosophy is to aim at the center of the target no matter what it is.

That's why they invented the double-tap. First shot to the body, second to the head.

I did not say not to shoot centre mass(I would,if I didn't feel confident of taking a head shot at the time)what I was saying is even if you are in a situation where the use of lethal force is justified,it's only justified for the purpose of stopping the threat, not killing the perp. The perp might die when I shoot him(or her,hey let's be fair here) in the chest with a 3inch magnum #4 buckshot round, but my legal intent is to stop the threat,it is not a 007 licence to kill.

-- zoobie (zoobiezoob@yahoo.com), October 07, 1999.

Actually, Zoobie is correct. Technically you are supposed to be shooting to stop the attack. It just so happens that all the things that work best to stop the attack, targeting center of mass, continue shooting until attacker is no longer a threat, etc... also tend to kill the target. If the target is no longer able to attack, you had DAMN WELL BETTER not shoot at it any more.

And, yes, in this sick society, people who attack you and yours sometimes win lawsuits against the intended victem in court. The best defence against that is information on what is leagal in your state. A good start is reading "In the gravest extreme" by Massad Ayoob.

Hope it never comes to that.

If I shoot a perp twice in the chest with 3 inch #4 buck shot(putting 82 .24 calibre copper coated shot into the perps chest cavity)and amazingly the perp continued to be a threat,I'd continue to shoot him/her until he/she ceased to be a threat.

Just remember this phrase when the police arrive: "I was in fear of my life, and I want a lawyer - NOW!"

-- phread (lurking@y2k.com), October 07, 1999.

For any of you looing for a good shotgun for home protection, i will recommend the MOSSBERG Model 500.

You can get one for under $200 and it comes with a cable lock to protect your family.

I bought a model 590 and turned it into a tactical shotgun, but them im all for overkill (no pun intended)

"Mozambique: two in the belly, one in the beak."

Don't draw if you're not prepared to shoot. Don't shoot if you're not prepared to kill. This is serious stuff, not like t.v..

People with guns, please, train with them. Get used to them now, spend a lot of time at the range. You will be safer with the weapon, and you will instinctively know how to use it if, god forbid, the time comes.

-- gunfilbert (gfilbert@nutroll.net), October 07, 1999.

Funny you should mention the golden rule and guns in the same sentence, maybe you can take a lesson from yourself. Do unto others have you would have them do unto you. If you can't stand the idea of being shot by a gun then don't pick one up and you'll greatly reduce your chances. Big boy rules. Live by the gun, die by the gun. The choice is ultimately yours.

-- (sweet@home.alabama), October 07, 1999.

sweet home...PLuuuLEEEase!!! None of this 'golden rule' stuff...If we do end up in a dog-eat-dog Mad Max Thunderdome mode then, hey...somehow I just don't think harsh language is going to deter a looter.

-- Billy-Boy (Rakkasn@Yahoo.com), October 07, 1999.

eyes,zoobie,

Maybe I didn't make myself clear. If I shoot someone and by wounding them they stop being a threat, then I stop shooting. But my best chance at survival, my best chance of not being injured myself or placing others around me at risk, is by shooting to kill. The only way to prove in court that you intended to kill vs. stop the threat is if *YOU* admit it. Hence the advice to KEEP YOUR MOUTH SHUT! I have absolutely no desire to ever be in a situation where I am forced to shoot someone, but if I am, I'll shoot to kill and take my chances with the jury.

helen

One time I was in a fight with this guy and he pulled a knife when my back was turned and rammed it in my left kidney. I didn't feel a thing! I broke his arm, nose knocked him out with a pool stick and broke his shoulder.

All before passing out and before the ambulance arrived. My friends dragged me outside and when the ambulance got there I was first.

I have seen people get shot and take off running for a mile or more to get away.

You never know.

I love GUN threads. They are so Neanderthal and carnivorous.

-- GoinApes (in@cave .edu), October 07, 1999.

If someone is approaching you with a weapon, they obviously do not have good intentions.Wait until they enter your home then get rid of the bastard or bitch. By the way, is it legal to defend your property, if you own land in the country, outside your home? A Texan wants to know.

-- Feller (feller@wanna.help), October 07, 1999.

Most home invasion activity takes place at night. I have gone out twice now to practice shooting in the dark, it's a lot different than daytime range shooting. Don't get a good flashlight, get a great one! Learn to point the flashlight with your off hand and take aim with your other. My shotgun has become my y2k weapon of choice as a result of this night time practice. If you have a place to shoot at night, I highly recomend it.

-- Bill (y2khippo@yahoo.com), October 07, 1999.

Hmm...now that I think about it,if I shoot a perp twice in the chest with 3inch magnum #4 buckshot and the perp continues to be a threat then I'm most likely dealing with a Terminator and I should probably get out of there post haste.

-- zoobie (zoobiezoob@yahoo.com), October 08, 1999.

That would depend on the range, Zoob. I prefer the 3 1/2" 00 buck myself; greater range.

Godspeed,
