COOPERATIVE PREPS: Do you still have preps to get?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

Cooperative Preps

The purpose of this thread and the other thread by the same title in the TB2000 Preparation forum is for people to go ahead and list any thing they'd like to get "for as cheaply as they can get it".

The idea is for people who see "wanted things" in common can get in touch with others (here or by private email) and coordinate a cooperative buying effort. I can attempt to manage it all or several people can manage different kinds of preps. It would be best if "managers" have a reseller's tax id and be able to take credit cards (for those that don't have cash). Folks using credit cards should be aware that it is only fair that they pay the credit card processing fees (generally 3-5 percent for Master Card and Visa). Some "managers" might want to offer additional services such as bucketing bulk products in order to divide up a bulk order. Of course, buckets, lids, dessicants, and oxygen absorbers may cost more. In general, "managers" will be receiving the products, dividing up the goods, and shipping them to the cooperative
buyers.

When you are looking at lists, don't think you have to get the exact same quantity or exact same goods as those goods listed.

For example, if you want to get sprouting seeds, you probably don't have to get the same kinds and same qualities as the ones that I'd like to get. And who knows, I may re-evaluate what I want if we can get a better deal by buying more of one thing than another. The guiding rule should be to save as much money as possible as we prep in the end game.

My List

In a previous thread, I listed several items that I would like to add to my preps inventory. Below is my new list:

Foods

Canned Foods
Canned Ground Beef

Dehydrated/ Long term Storage
Number 10 cans of Butter Powder
Number 10 cans of Powdered Milk
Number 10 cans of Sour Cream

Nitrogen-Packed 5 Gallon "Bucketed"
Beans
Rice

Sprouting Seeds
Red Clover
Sweet Pea
Broccoli
Sweet Wheat
etc.

Vitamins, Herbals, and Oils

Glucosamine Sulfate [great for joints and large breed dogs]
TMG (Trimethylglycine)
SAMe [for when people can't handle it]
St. John's Wort Supplement [similar to SAMe]
Super Digestive Enzymes [to deal with canned food]
Phyto Food [concentrated doses of plant extracts]
Cranex [concentrated cranberry extract]
Silymartin [milk thistle powdered extract for the liver]
Tea Tree Oil
Golden Seal

Gear

Radios
2 Baygen Crank AM/FM/SW Crank Radios with Solar Panels

Food-related
12 Sprouting Trays

Offerings

Since my first posting of this thread, I have been contacted by several people. One forum regular has a good source for inexpensive "used" 5 gallon buckets with lids and seals ($US 2 -- shipping and handling not included) as well as buckets of other sizes. If they would like to out themselves and coordinate purchases and mailing of these buckets, I have no problem with them making a notice here. The other contact was in regard to a dehydrated food company that has temporary over stocks in a variety of things at a very attractive discount. As of last Friday, the items are as follows:

No. 10 Cans (by the case/ 6 No. 10 Cans)

Fruit

APPLESAUCE GRANULES
APPLE SLICES
BANANA SLICES
FRUIT COCKTAIL
APPLE FLAKES
RAISINS

Vegetables

CHOPPED ONIONS
DICED CARROTS
SWEET CORN
GREEN WHOLE PEAS
TOMATO POWDER
KIDNEY BEANS

Protein

TVP - BEEF FLAVORED
TVP - CHICKEN FLAVORED

Grain

QUICK ROLLED OATS
POPCORN
CEREAL MIX, Cracked Grain
GRANOLA
CORNMEAL

Miscellaneous

BUTTERMILK POWDER
CORNSTARCH
IODIZED SALT

Other contacts say that they can provide Aladdin lamps, Katadyn Filters, and Baygen Radios at "low" prices if a total quantity of 10 orders can be made of each thing. I can't discuss the details on the forum as such information may result in the loss of dealership licenses.

Sincerely,
Stan Faryna

Those of you who have contacted me privately by email, I have not forgotten you. I just got back from a dog show in New Jersey and will be back to working on the cooperative preps by tomorrow night (after work).

You mentioned a group price on Alladin's in another thread -- do you know what they would cost?

-- Ron Schwarz (rs@clubvb.com.delete.this), October 12, 1999.

Ron,

Email me and I will email you back the price quoted for the group buy. As I mentioned, I can't publish the prices for Aladdins, Katadyns, or Baygens in public or the distributors would lose their rights to sell the products.

Sincerely, Stan Faryna

I sent out the first group email about the Aladdin lamp deal. Looks like we need about 5 more interested people. So if you got interest, email me and I will email you the details.

Up to the top.

-- Stan Faryna (faryna@groupmail.com), October 13, 1999.

This is your last chance to join us in the first cooperative order of Aladdin Incandescent Table Lamps (Tall, Aluminium Model). The price of the lamps and spare parts are less than the prices listed at www.lehmans.com. If you would like more information about these non-pressurized, indoor kerosene/lamp oil burning lamps, please email me by Friday (October 22, 1999) at the following email address: faryna@groupmail.com .

A business who wishes to remain anonymous in order that they not lose their dealer/distributor status is also offering us an opportunity to buy Katadyn filters at costs significantly below the suggested retail price. Again, we will need to come up with a minimum of 10 orders. Any of these three models may be ordered: Katadyn drip filter (similar to the British Berkefield unit), Katadyn pocket filter, and the large disaster relief sized filter. I will be out of town for a day or so, but if you send an email to me at faryna@groupmail.com indicating your interest, I will send you descriptions of the unit, prices, and the anticipated timeline in which we have to make order decisions, collect order payments, and when to expect delivery of orders.

Sincerely,
Stan Faryna

Hello, I participated in the Aladdin deal. Now maybe I can help. I can buy Zippo and Windmill lighters at wholesale (other things too, but let's start here). If anyone is interested I'll pass on the deal. I'll have to call and get the latest prices. I'll follow up Monday or Tuesday.

Jeff,

Thanks for the initiative on a Zippo cooperative deal. I'd be very interested. So keep me informed.

COOPERATIVE PREPS: Katadyn Water Filters at less than retail prices.

http://www.greenspun.com/bboard/q-and-a-fetch-msg.tcl?msg_id=001d Xx

-- Stan Faryna (faryna@groupmail.com), October 26, 1999.

Hi Stan and everyone, Sorry for the delay (out of town this week). Here are the Zippo and Windmill lighter prices:

Zippo Brushed Chrome lighter $6.48 each Zippo Orange lighter $10.00 each Zippo Cammo lighter $11.00 each Zippo lighter fluid w/ flints $1.20 each Windmill Clear/Black lighter $26.00 each Windmill Glow-n-dark lighter $32.00 each

Here is a link that describes the Windmill: http://backcountry- equipment.com/accessrs/a-windmill_lighter/windmill.html.

The wholesaler said that he needed the order no later than 11/15 in order for it to be delivered to me before Christmas. I feel that we should have the order in by 11/8 in order for me to have time to ship them all out and reach you before Christmas. So please let me know if you are interested. I personnaly have one orange, one cammo, and one glow-n-dark. I like the versatility of the Zippo and really like the glow-n-dark Windmill.

Jeff

Stan, it seems like time is too short for you to run this. If I'm stepping on toes I'm sorry.

-- Jeff Sandfort (orders@sandfort.org), October 30, 1999.

Jeff,

No apologies needed. This is exactly how I imagined the cooperative preps would work.

As for zippo lighters, how about those polished brass zippos? And what about zippo flints and lighter fluid?

Sincerely, Stan Faryna

Hi All, We are running out of time fast. With Thanksgiving and Christmas coming up time for shipping things out is drying up. If anyone else is going to help set up a coop buy. Then it needs to happen ASAP. Please don't wait for Stan to just handle it all. So having said that here is a list of things I'm going to be getting soon. If you want to piggy back on me then let me know and I'll see if I can get a better deal for a larger quantity.

Jeff

I have been a dealer for the BAYGEN PRODUCTS (along with a few hundred other products) for almost 2 years now, and I can tell you that about 1 out of 8 of the Baygen Freeplay Radios (both SW and AM/FM) and the Lanterns have faulty wind-up mechanisms. When you wind them up, the 'spring' has a tendency to 'snap'. There is no way to remedy the situation except to return the broken unit to the dealer so they can do an exchange. Will your 'dealer' have additional units in stock to handle these certain exchanges?

Question: If you buy 10 units and sell all ten, and one or more breaks, who will be providing the replacements? Is it worth the aggrevation and chance to not have a functioning product in order to save 15-20% (in this case $15-20)? Who will pay for the shipping to return it to the 'dealer'? Who will pay for the shipping of the 'new' unit back to you? As a dealer, I have to pay these costs. That is why we make a profit, to handle these unexpected problems.

The dealer/distributor system is there for a reason. If you can save a little money, that's great, but at what cost?

-- Mark (markmic@kynd.net), November 08, 1999.

Mark,

Thanks for the low down on the very questionable quality control of Freeplay products. Certainly, you have a point-- if not a little overstated. A dealer will generally absorb such problems and shipping back a replacement unit to the customer. I imagine that the dealer will assume the same responsibilities in the coop buy. But are you also saying that you also pay for shipping of a malfunctioning unit from customer to you? That is service. What's the name of your store?

The point of the cooperative preps, Mark, is to make sure people can get as much preps as cheaply as possible, because the stakes are high and preps are expensive. It is not far fetched to imagine that some of there cooperative buys might save someone's life or make their life a little more comfortable if TSHTF. I don't know if you are upset by the possibility of losing a few sales to the cooperative preppers. If not, maybe you will find it in your heart to be a part of the cooperative preps.

I hope so.

Sincerely, Stan Faryna
