Here is an excerpt from a diocesan newpaper article written by Fr. William Saunders. Fr. Saunders is dean of the Notre Dame Graduate School of Christendom College and pastor of Queen of Apostles Parish, both in Alexandria, Virginia: "For the greater part of this century, the faithful recited the prayer to St. Michael at the end of the Mass. Pope Leo XIII (d. 1903) had a prophetic vision of the coming century of sorrow and war. After celebrating Mass, the Holy Father was conferring with his cardinals. Suddenly, he fell to the floor. The cardinals immediately called for a doctor. No pulse was detected, and the Holy Father was feared dead. Just as suddenly, Pope Leo awoke and said, "What a horrible picture I was permitted to see!" In this vision, God gave Satan the choice of one century in which to do his worst work against the Church. The devil chose the twentieth century. So moved was the Holy Father from this vision that he composed the prayer to St. Michael the Archangel: 'St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle! Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray, and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly host, by the power given you by God, thrust into Hell Satan and all the other evil spirits who roam about the world seeking the ruin of souls.' Pope Leo ordered this prayer said at the conclusion of Mass in 1886. (When Pope Paul VI issued the new rite of the Mass in 1968, the prayer to St. Michael and reading of the "last gospel" at the end of the Mass were suppressed.) ...
"In the Spring of 1994, our Holy Father, Pope John Paul II, urged the faithful to offer the prayer to St. Michael the Archangel. He also made the strong suggestion that the recitation of the prayer be instituted at Mass once again. (Note that the Holy Father did not mandate the recitation of the prayer at Mass.) Clearly, the Holy Father was responding to the grave evils we see present in our world the sins of abortion, euthanasia, terrorism, genocide, and the like. As we approach the millennium, Satan and the other fallen angels are doing their best to lead souls to Hell. We need the help of St. Michael! For this reason, many parishes have erected a shrine in St. Michaels honor or offer the prayer at the end of Mass ..."

Hello, David S.

You will be happy to know that I am a parishioner at St. Michael Catholic Church -- an "ordinary," non-traditionalist parish -- where we do pray the Prayer to St. Michael after each weekday Mass. How is this possible? A slighly long story. Please bear with me.

According to Fr. William Saunders (one of my favorite sources), "Pope Leo ordered this prayer said at the conclusion of Mass in 1886."
So it was inserted as an actual part of the Mass, along with other so-called Leonine Prayers. These were:
1. Three "Hail Marys," and the "Hail Holy Queen."
2. A prayer ("O God, our refuge and our strength, look down in mercy upon the people who cry to Thee ... [etc.]).
3. A triple invocation ("Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, have mercy on us.")

Fr. Saunders also states: "When Pope Paul VI issued the new rite of the Mass in 1968, the prayer to St. Michael and reading of the "last gospel" [John 1] at the end of the Mass were suppressed. ..."

And now for the part you'll like, David S:
"In the Spring of 1994, our Holy Father, Pope John Paul II, urged the faithful to offer the prayer to St. Michael the Archangel. He also made the strong suggestion that the recitation of the prayer be instituted at Mass once again. (Note that the Holy Father did not mandate the recitation of the prayer at Mass.) Clearly, the Holy Father was responding to the grave evils we see present in our world -- the sins of abortion, euthanasia, terrorism, genocide, and the like. As we approach the millennium, satan and the other fallen angels are doing their best to lead souls to Hell. We need the help of St. Michael! For this reason, many parishes have erected a shrine in St. Michael's honor or offer the prayer at the end of Mass ..."

So that the prayer does not appear to be part of the Mass itself, the laity initiates it as the priest is leaving the altar (and, in our parish, it is not prayed aloud on Sunday, since a closing hymn is being sung).

God bless you.
John

One thing I am sure of, is that once the prayer to Blessed Michael was taken out after Mass, the church gave away it's wonderful allie, hence the scandal and so forth, Blessed Michael is my dear friend, his name meaning "OF God", SO I PRAY FOR HIS PROTECTION CONSTANLY.

Blessed Sister Emmerick, June 1, 1821:

"I saw what I believe to be nearly all the bishops of the world, but only a small number were perfectly sound. I also saw the Holy Father- - God fearing and prayerful. Nothing left to be desired in his appearance, but he was weakened by old age and by much suffering. His head was lolling from side to side, and it dropped onto his chest as if he were falling asleep. He often fainted and seemed to be dying. But when he was praying, he was often comforted by apparitions from Heaven. Then, his head was erect, but as soon as it dropped again onto his chest, I saw a number of people looking quickly right and left, that is, in the direction of the world."

In the Diocese of Lansing Michigan, the Saint Michael prayer is prayed after mass. Here the priests initiate the prayer and then process out afterwards. So far, it's the only diocese I know of, that does this. Does anyone know of any others, other than Independent or traditional chapels?

Could anyone please tell me if the Saint Michael the Arch Angel prayer should be said to Saint Michael or Blessed Michael? It has been pointed out to me that Blessed Michael can't be a Saint as only humans can be cannonised and therefore as he is an angel he should be addressed as Blessed Michael and not Saint Michael. I have always said Saint Michael until I was corrected. Please help! - and say the prayer everyday!

Although Michael, Raphael, and Gabriel technically are not "saints" in the strict sense, it is traditional to speak of them using that title, which after all just means holy, and that is the proper wording of the archangel prayer.

Hello, Cynthia.
There is no need to refer to St. Michael as "Blessed." The title, "Saint," is appropriate for any creature whose abode is Heaven.

When Pope Leo XIII wrote the prayer (in Latin) to the Archangel Michael, he referred to him as a "Sanctus" (Saint):
"Sancte Michael Archangele, defende nos in proelio, contra nequitiam et insidias diaboli esto praesidium. Imperet illi Deus, supplices deprecamur: tuque, Princeps militiae coelestis, satanam aliosque spiritus malignos, qui ad perditionem animarum pervagantur in mundo, divina virtute, in infernum detrude. Amen."
[from http://home.earthlink.net/~thesaurus/thesaurus/Angeli/SancteMichael.ht ml]

The most famous litany used by the Church (heard at ordinations and other ceremonies) is the Litany of the Saints, which goes back to Pope St. Gregory in the year 590. In this, the angels Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael -- after Our Lady, but before all other saints -- are referred to as "Sancti" (Saint) ... and there is a collective petition: "Omnes sancti Angeli et Archangeli, orate pro nobis" ("All you holy Angels and Archangels, pray for us.")

There is even a Litany of St. Michael.

God bless you.
John
PS: I am a member of one of the many parishes called "St. Michael Catholic Church." At my parish, the prayer is recited after each weekday Mass.

Look, the answer is quite simple..

I go to a Traditionalist Roman Catholic Church, you know, the way God wanted it. And we pray the St. Michael Prayer two time during mass. Right at the end of the Rosary and at the end of Mass. The Church I go to is actually a Chapel called "St. Michael the Archangel."

His prayer, written by Pope Leo XIII, is to be said as the last prayer of the Rosary, which our Blessed Mother has allowed us. Invoke St. Michael's name and Honor him Frequently.. He helps, thank the Lord.

I go to a 21st century Catholic Church, you know, the way God now wants it. We pray the St. Michael Prayer at the end of every Mass, Sundays and weekdays. We have parish rosary on friday evenings, as the rosary is not an authorized part of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass.

It should be noted that in Traditional Latin Mass communities, the Rosary is often prayed publicly before Mass, and that the St. Michael prayer as ordered by Pope Leo XIII is said after Mass is over. Neither the Rosary nor the St. Michael prayer are a part of the Mass itself.
