Was thinking of filling 55gal with hot water. It will kill bacteria but will gallons melt or cause plastic residue. Is it overkill. Is bleach sufficient.

How hot? In order to kill most bacteria, the water has to boiling for several minutes--that is, the water would have to be actively boiling *inside* the container you are trying to sanitize. Just pouring boiling water into the container would't do it. Better to wash with soap and water, rinse with water, then rinse with bleach--a 10-20% solution should be sufficient if I remember correctly.

Speaking of your water tank, get a 4 foot food-grade hose for about $4 from your hardware or marine supply store. Keep it coiled up on top of the tank, with ends coupled together to keep critters out. Then when you need emergency water, you have the hose ready to hook up.
