'Don't Panic' Contract Awarded - (BOSTON) -- The Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency is planning to spend 200-thousand-dollars on an ad campaign designed to prevent Y-Two-K panic. The Rendon Group, whose owner reportedly has ties to Governor Paul Cellucci's administration, will produce the "Don't Panic" ads. The state originally intended to spend 60-thousand-dollars for radio ads, but the Y-Two-K ad campaign has now been expanded to include other forms of media. "

Well ain't that barfimonious. Rendon rides to the propaganda rescue again. Lawyers, start your engines ...

Actually, this is criminal, unconscionable, intolerable.

This is such a stupid move. Look around. Do you see anybody panicking or even looking like they're about to panic?

Do recent polls indicate anybody is panicking?

These idiots are going to CAUSE a panic with these ads.

(fortunately, I beat the rush and did all my panicking a year ago.)

Methinksith they will wind up protestingith too muchith. (It was mentioned in another thread that no one should be behind people when The Big Light [tm] finally goes on. I got a better idea: Don't be anywhere in FRONT of them. MOOOOOOOOOOOooooooooooooooooooo...)

It's already been paraphrased above, but I'll quote Gil Scott-Heron anyway, from a song in the early 80s, I believe: "Why wait, when you can panic now and avoid the rush?"

I'm not in, or near, Massachusetts. Today on AM radio heard a "public service" commercial:

(tinkly, jingly elevator-type music in the background)

"You can have confidence in direct deposit of social security and other financial benefits...

"Bank regulators have determined that 99.75% of banks are ready for Y2k

"The bank is the safest place for your money.

"So relax and have a prosperous new year."

It didn't sound reassuring to me. Reminded me of something Cory Hamasaki wrote to the effect that when somebody tells him not to panic, Cory's first thought is to knock him down so he can get to the door faster.

Does anyone remember the "Making It In Massachusetts" campaign? We'll have nothing to worry about if "Don't Panic" is any thing like it.

It doesn't surprise me that The Rendon Group has connections to Gov Cellucci. All the man knows how to do is spend our money...We have have a project going on "The Big Dig" where they are building some sort of new highway system through Boston that is only costing the taxpayers approx. $1 million dollars a foot. I'm sooo not kidding.

The Mayor of Boston, Mumbles Mineno said in June (?) that "Boston was completely and totally and absolutely Y2k ready...however, the electric companies and hospitals are privately owned, so they didn't report to us." Well, Ye-Haaa! At least the traffic lights should work, ey?

"Laws yes! M-O-O-N spells Y2k Ok!"

BTW: I haven't seen/heard *any* ads so far...
