Generator vs Welder/generator

Much has been posted about generators. I have an opportunity to purchase a 10kw Welder/generator and have been told the genset has stronger windings than a regular genset. Anyone have an opnion. Price seems to be right and this set has low hours.

Tommy...my son is a welder, and the machine he has, a Miller, is also a 110/220v a/c generator, and is capable of running our entire home, minus the electric hot water heater. He told me that many of the older machines(specifically the Lincoln model 200) and some cheaper newer ones only generate 120v DC current, capable of running brush type motors only, not suitable for induction motors, such as most household appliances. I purchased a Hobart welding machine, with the 20hp Onan engine, specifically for repairs on my equipment, but it also produces 110/220v ac, 5000w. so I may use it for generation purposes if required, and the price wasn't much different than a good gen-set. Any machine you purchase should state on the face the generating abilities, at least all I looked at did, and choose one accordingly.

The generator we use on the worksite (sorry, no idea what kind) doubles as a powerful generator. But it is LOUD and very fuel inefficient. Check on both before buying and weigh it into your decision.
