I have these big 25 gallon plastic tubs that have a clamp thing that goes around the outside to seal them---do you think i could bury food in them?

Are you asking if it's possible? Or if it would be a good Idea?

Either way--maybe if I used moisture absorbers?

I've been thinking about burying 1 about the size you wrote about. They say a ground hole is constantly 57 degrees ie, refrigeration for milk, left overs etc., be sure to cover it, to keep the animals away. I w/also line the hole w/plastic to keep the dirt away, cover w/a tarp to keep it cold. Not from a snow state, so this is one way to keep things cool. I'm not planning on hiding food this way, I have a hard enough time just finding where I put my slippers, watch etc..

My mind has been busy with the same type thoughts. I was asking my son and husband to brainstorm about how we could have an icebox of sorts that would sit outside the basement window with access being from the window of the basement. I'm not sure how to insulate so that things within it wouldn't freeze, but be cold enough to keep "stuff" from going bad.

The only question I have about your plan is this. If you're correct and the temp is 57 degrees, isn't the temp. necessary to keep things from going bad in your frig. 40 degrees?

Yes it is. However many things including canned goods have their storage lives just about doubled when stored at 55 deg. F so while it may not help milk very much it would cerrtainly be worth doing.

I just wrote a book review of "The 50$ and up Underground House Book" for a magazine (contact info below), which I believe contains info which would be very useful to someone wanting to build cheap underground storage. Worth looking into......DCK

The $50 & Up Underground House Book, by Mike Oehler, Sixth Edition. Mole Publishing Co., Rt. 4 Box 618, Dept. 8, Bonners Ferry, Idaho 83805. $13.95 + $3.00 P&H. ISBN 0-442-27311-8

Ahhhhh...OK...I wasn't thinking about other foodstuffs besides what we refrigerate now. DUH! Thanks for the info.
