Alternative Housing Construction, Alternative Engery, Homesteading Links and More

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) Preparation Forum : One Thread

There was a discussion on the original forum, What should I do?, asking for ideas and suggestions for obtaining or constructing alternative housing on a tight budget.

Some of these links might be helpful, not only for alternative construction, but lots of information on homesteading, gardening, canning, animal care and alternative energy.

Yellow Mountain Institute for Sustainable Living. They focus on environmental issues and construction the is easy on the environment (and the pocketbook). Great Resource for information on Strawbale Home Construction

Homestead Links us a page with almost 600 links dealing with homesteading topics of livestock care, gardening, homeschooling and Construction of homes, buildings, grey water systems, and more.

Rocky Mountain Survival Group another great resource for all sorts of questions. Various Housing Ideas can be found there.

They have good ideas for Primitive and Semi-Permanent Housing that might be helpful for bug out planning.

Cosmo's How To Survive Library is an excellant source for ideas. Housing, food storage, fuel storage...all those y2k topics.

County Life Online Village. This is one of my favorite bookmarks. Forum discussions about bread baking, dairy products, gardening (under construction), and I see they have gotten their section up and running that deals with Medical Herbs and Wild Plants. Free food from the yard!

Link from the Country Life Online Village to the Off the Grid Cooperative. Homesteading and alternative ideas for living.

There are two forums at Off the Grid Cooperative, and the folks there are very knowledgeable and helpful and can probably offer a great deal of help and links:

Off the Grid Discussion Forum. Solar heating, alternative housing, wood burning...you name it.

Homesteading Discussion Forum. All sorts of information about homesteading, livestock care, gardening, canning, etc.

I like Mike and just wrote a review of his underground house book for Home Power magazine. I'd like to point out that Mike's underground building approach would be superb for underground shelter, caches, root cellars, etc. Cheap and sturdy....

For home-made power Check out http://www.homepower.com...been published for 13 years about off-grid living and rolling your own power. I'll admitt to non-objectivity here...I work with them and produce CDROMs that contain their back issues (and more). The website always contain an electronic edition (in PDF) of the current in-print issue for free download and a bunch of other useful stuff.
