Social Security Memo- is it a small oops or a big OOPS?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

One area of concern at SSA. I have sent this to Rep. Morella, and Rep. Horn this morning. Hope they got it in time to include in their hearing. 'Inordinate' is such an unhelpful word. Net/NT techs please comment. Cheers, AGF

Subj: IWS/LAN Workstation Date: 10/20/99 3:00 PM Special Hotline Report

We are experiencing an inordinate number of problems with IWS/LAN workstations. Many of the problems are the result of a download of the workstation operating system upgrade,WINNT service Pack 4. This is national in scope (includes all Regions) Unfortunately this service pack is necessary for the operating system to be Year 2000 compliant. The download began on Friday October 8 and will continue until all workstations have received it. The main problems have been Blue Screens of Death (Stop Screen) and connectivity failures with LAN PRINT. The Systems Branch (SB) is working with the Office of Systems and Unisys to handle the problems as expeditiously as possible. The National problem Management Tracking System (PMTS) Task Force has also been notified and is working to assist us. If additional Stop Screens are experienced, local SLSs will be shutting down and restarting the PCs. If a second Stop Screen appears the SLCs will be notifying the OCO Help Desk. Our goal is to bring any workstation with a reported stop screen back into service within 48 hours. In the meantime, there are numerous workstations in each division which users may be moved to in order to process their work. If you have any questions, your SLC can call the Help Desk for assistance.
