Moderator/Syssops -- Today is Polly Troll Day: Can we be spared?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

The last dozen posts are FILLED with disruptions by a few individuals who are really wasting everyone's time and the bandwidth, which seems to be their sole aim. It would be appreciated if you could figure out a way to clear up the forum so that those who wish real information need not wade through this excrement. Thank you.

Dito that!

I agree completely! If it is possible PLEASE do something.

-- Mr. Pinochle (pinochledd@aol.com), October 29, 1999.

Do you guys know that posts are NEVER deleted from Biffy or Debunky?

Whattsa matta, can't stand fair play? Can't stand that idea of equal "at-bats"? You need to resort to DELETING things YOU DON'T LIKE just so that it makes the Doomer position look better?

Wow, you are desperate.

-- (_@_._), October 29, 1999.

This forum is intended for people who are concerned about the impact of the Y2000 problem on their personal lives, and who want to discuss various fallback contingency plans with other like-minded people.

-- Dancr (addy.available@my.webpage), October 29, 1999.

You know, that dash-dash guy sounds a lot like Doomers Suck. Exactly like DS.

-- The Great Pumpkin (sittin'@the.patch), October 29, 1999.

Dancr,

In case you haven't noticed, there are hundreds of posts that have absolutely NOTHING to do with Y2K. Most of these are posted by the dommers. Ever heard the term OT?

-- (WhatAlaugh@haha.com), October 29, 1999.

I'm guessing we have Cory to thank for this...

R.

-- Roland (nottelling@nowhere.com), October 29, 1999.

Dancr, it's a public forum. You don't like trolls, then start a private chat BB and enjoy. Or have your beloved Sysops delete everything that rubs you the wrong way. Won't that be swell! It'll be like a whole seperate reality for ya! A reality where everything is peaches and cream and you are never called upon to back up what you are saying.

-- (_@_._), October 29, 1999.

Check out the forum where these trolls hang out.

http://206.28.81.29/HyperNews/get/gn.html

See how demented there thinking is. De Nile runs deep there.

Leave a message if your feel like it.

-- (.@...), October 29, 1999.

"This forum is intended for people who are concerned about the impact of the Y2000 problem on their personal lives, and who want to discuss various fallback contingency plans with other like-minded people. "

This poster is concerned about the impact of the hysteria over the Y2000 problem on his personal life, and wants to dicuss fallback contingency plans in the event of a Y2K-fear induced panic.

There, now just about anything can fit into that vision statement can't it?

-- LOL (polly@troll.day), October 29, 1999.

Just ignore the freakin' trolls and they will go away sooner or later.

-- Ohio Bob (ohiobob@buckeyestate.com), October 29, 1999.

@:

Perhaps it is related to the fact that we really don't have time to waste on dimwit postings like yours. Go back to your fellow inbreeds at debunky.

-- X (X@X.com), October 29, 1999.

The question is: why have they descended recently?

Was it information that scared them ?

-- lisa (lisa@trolls.everywhere), October 29, 1999.

Come on X, if that were true you would have never have wasted time telling me so, you would have just ignored me. I think the reason alot of people hate "pollys" is because in what passes for a vision of the future for most Doomers does not include anybody they don't like. That is why they relish the idea of seeing "my ilke" die slowly, so that they can have the chance to become something they never could have been before the Apocalypse... important.

-- (_@_._), October 29, 1999.

Nice way to regurgitate the Fear Factory's Bullhit, lisa. Now can you come up with something that is not in any way associated with this funny farm?

-- (_@_._), October 29, 1999.

Could --@ be Y2K Pro in disguise? Or is he a small child, home sick from school, playing with daddy's computer?

-- Ohio Bob (ohiobob@buckeyestate.com), October 29, 1999.

As disruptive as I find the creature .@... and his its ilk, I personally won't delete any of its postings simply because people don't like them. If they were to contain a litany of curse words or unauthorized personal information about other people, I would not hesitate to delete.

I don't like the idea of "censorship" (whatever that means), and I would rather let these disruptors throw in a few one-liners than have the forum's time wasted on yet another useless flame war about "censorship." We don't need to go through that again. There are, what, eight weeks left until the rollover? If you can't take a few written jabs by bored idiots, how do expect to get through something much worse?

People, just ignore them. Scroll past them. Reply to them with information, if you must. Use their taunts as an oppoertunity to fine tune your own arguements. Otherwise, you simply give them the ammunition that they are looking for to continue their taunts.

Think!

-- Sysop #2 (Sysop #2@TB2000.forum), October 29, 1999.

lisa, I suspect that with only two months more to go, the trolls are out in full force to try to dissuade anyone from personally preparing for Y2K. I doubt if we will ever know exactly why, but at this point simple rage (and fear) at not being personally prepared themselves is as good an explanation as any.

Remember: if you are prepared for Y2K disruptions, you are prepared to be wrong with little consequence. The polly trolls have placed their bet on no Y2K disruptions, and encourage others to do likewise, in spite of the severe risk of being wrong. Why? Well, ever hear the expression, "Misery loves company"?

-- King of Spain (madrid@aol.cum), October 29, 1999.

**********************************************************************

The difference between the legitimate members of this forum and the illegitimate posters is simple to explain.

Those who come here in a spirit and attitude of harmony, tranquillity and freedom from disturbance are sharing this forum in the American tradition of freedom of speech. Wherein, no party may utter words which are in violation of the law and yet are free to honestly share thoughts and opinions of interest to those assembled. IN THIS FORUM as in the public at large, Americans must obey rules of conduct which allow the needs of the group, thus assembled, to communicate as the group honestly seeks. Those who would devise or act to disrupt such free and open discussions, should in the American tradition be warned first to desist. AND IF THEY CONTINUE, THEY SHOULD BE EJECTED.

The illegitimate posters have ill intent toward the legitimate members of this forum and as such have differentiated themselves by their own definitions and actions. The ill will that they intend and act upon, as a group is unwarranted and unwelcomed. They are clearly here to destroy and disrupt. THEY SHOULD BE EJECTED.

Freedom of speech is a two edged sword which cuts both ways.

I say lets let it cut them now and be rid of them!

"lisa, I suspect that with only two months more to go, the trolls are out in full force to try to dissuade anyone from personally preparing for Y2K."

What a total LIE!

I have to hand it to you guys though, you have a certain flair for getting everything totally wrong.

-- (_@_._), October 29, 1999.

Snoose button,

If you had the chance to totaly destory and disrupt the Manson family would you?

I'm not comparing you guys to the Manonson family, but it IS logical to debunk anyone who is planning to shoot "the pillaging hoardes", which is (if your scanrio would be true) the same people you are trying to "reach out to" (John Q. Public).

I guess if they are dumb enough not to prepare they deserve to get shot huh?

Nice.

-- (_@_._), October 29, 1999.

deserve has nothing to do with it.. and if it comes to that... (god help us) yes they will be shot, and preparers will be shot, many many people will be shot... so what is your point? nobody should ever be shot? niuce idea, but it happens... and I have yet to find a common denominator amongst those who get shot to determine whether or not they "deserved" it or not... maybe it's just being in front of the gun at the wrong nanosecond, who knows? But yes, people will probably be shot and all your incessant drivel and moralizing won't change a damn thing if the worst happens... people on this forum are trying to make a difference REGARDLES of whether the worst happens or not... so your nonstont prattle about paranoia and nitpciking really doesn't matter, we're prepared to be wrong, we recognize that you could be right.. we hope so... but, for pete's sake... shut up... unles you have something constructive to say about surviving y2k.... jerkoff

-- jeremiah (braponspdetroit@hotmail.com), October 29, 1999.

Hey "jerkoff",

You remeber that movie Titanic? Remember that scene where the shipsman shoots one of the people trying to get into a life boat?

Nice way to treat you fellow humans when we are all in the same boat huh...

-- (_@_._), October 29, 1999.

@ - [i am so sick of jacking with you]

We are not in the same boat. We are prepared.

You are not.

No pain for us, either way.

Probable pain for you, whether financial, psychological, whatever.

We are not in the same boat.

-- lisa (lisa@work.now), October 29, 1999.

Actually, "_@_._" makes sort of a point: it's rare that you will ever find a polly troll that will stick it's neck out and actually say, "Don't prepare for Y2K". Anymore that you will ever hear Clinton say, "I want to screw every good looking woman that I can." But if you have any intelligence whatsoever, you can sort of figure out what is really going on by just using common sense.

For instance, take double-Decker. That dude says that he is ALL FOR personal preparation. In fact, he says that being prepared for disasters and stuff just plain makes sense anywhere, anytime. However, he then sez: Y2K per se is nothing to worry about, it is no big deal, and in itself is not worth preparing for. Translation: Yeah, you ought to be prepared (like you ought to floss your teeth three times a day), but it's not like there is any kind of DEADLINE coming up or anything. So, maybe put it on your list of New Year's resolutions or something.

The fact is: there is a deadline coming, at the rate of 60 seconds per minute -- January 1, 2000. It may bring about severe disruptions that may curtail your ability to feed and protect your family; on the other hand, it may not, nobody knows. PREPARE. Look for Stan Faryna's 14 DAYS OF PREPARATIONS threads, they are all over the place, if you need a place to start.

-- King of Spain (madrid@aol.cum), October 29, 1999.

IMHO I really don't think the pollys are here to try to talk anybody out of preparing. It seems more like their purpose is simply to get a response. Try ignoring them. Don't turn one boring polly note into a "65 responses" thread. It's also possible that as they become more desperate to stir things up they'll also become more outrageous and maybe a slightly more interesting read.

-- Lurker # 227 (jabawaki@erols.com), October 29, 1999.

lisa, We are not in the same boat. We are prepared.

You are not.

No pain for us, either way.

Probable pain for you, whether financial, psychological, whatever.

We are not in the same boat.

VERY, VERY nice sentiment...

Let me write that down on a Hallmark card and send it to the Dhali Llama.

-- (_@_._), October 29, 1999.

@ is CPR, who is pissed at Cory Hill, who disrupted his lair.

He'll get bored soon enough.

-- Roland (nottelling@nohwere.com), October 29, 1999.

Please, Please, Please, stop this NONSENSE. Why do we have to slander everyone who posts an opposing view. I have learned much here whatever the position taken. And we have only two months to go!

I respect differant views on this great UNKNOWN. How it will all play out is also an unknown. That is the only reason for making my plans now.

We have become so enthalled with placing others in either the Polly/Doomer camp we fail to see the 'forest for the trees'. We each must learn to look closely to gleem from each other. When we post to hit a position and fail to give evidence in support of same, we degrade the forest without adding any value thereto. Flint, once responded to me by saying we were argueably agreeing. To me that is what this form is all about. Out these responces, I'll make my own decisions.

Do not delete.

-- Tommy Rogers (Been there@Just a Thought.com), October 29, 1999.

That Elaine Seavey may not be a troll or a polly, but she sure is a trouble maker.

-- see it (see it@as.itis), October 29, 1999.

Ya know, if this place had become a source of credible information where people could go to find out what's really going on with Y2K then maybe there never would have been anybody disrupting anything. But, since there is so much misinformation and rumor on this forum and since no one but the pollys seems to care to separate the good data from the bad, then maybe this forum is getting what it deserves.

-- no (i@int.tellin), October 29, 1999.

You are dealing with junior (very junior) employees at one, or several, PR firms, that have been hired to belittle Y2K forums, and drive people away. There is no point reasoning with them, debating them, or responding in any way (other than media-jamming): they are paid to disrupt the forum. They will laugh, and deny it, but they are just poor little PR shills, sitting alone in their Lexington Avenue apartments at night eating chinese take-out. Professional disruptors. Sort of the Pinkerton guards of cyberspace. They are simply doing their job, which is to spread shit on this loury forum.

-- Jerry Brisco (bored@upnet.downet), October 29, 1999.

oooh! The voice of reason.

-- Not that touchy "@" person (_@_._._@_._), October 29, 1999.

I was refering to "no", Not Jerry with that voice of reason stuff.

-- Not that touchy "@" person (_@_._._@-._@_..), October 29, 1999.

@

For the record, most of us don't want Y2k problems to hurt anyone. If they do, then I certainly do not agree with them. My challenge to you is this: what have YOU added to this forum that is factual one way or another? Anyone (not necessarily referring to you personally) can be an asshole. Smartass comments only show one's childishness. Perhaps you can tell your polly friends like Y2k Dimwit Pro and You Know Who that. They haven't added jack shit to this forum, choosing only to display their juvenile needs to draw attention to themselves. Let's make this a fact-based discussion.

-- X (X@X.com), October 29, 1999.

I did mention a few companies that I know first hand are done Y2K remediating on anotheer thread by name, so save it, I have contributed "something" and not "jack shit".

But of course I'm more than willing to add jack shit too, as you can plainly see. I'm en equal opportunity kind of fellow.

-- Wrongarooni ! (_@_._@_._._@_.), October 29, 1999.

And for the record, Gar North, the Doomers Hero, has gone to say that he WANTS Y2K to bring down the entire system... in facthe has hoped for this all of his adult life.

Sound familiar

-- Wrong again (_@_.-@_.-@-.), October 29, 1999.

Wrong again -

Source that quote. You will find the "system" that Dr. North was referring to is not "the Whole System of Life As We Know It", but specifically the fractional reserve banking system, which he and others consider to be risky at best and bankrupt, even immoral, at worst. The argument is that allowing this sort of highly-leveraged activity creates an inherently unstable financial system. Y2K is seen as a destabilizing event which causes this system to fail and be overhauled. Creative destruction and all that. Think of Y2K as creating the "case for action" in addressing issues in the banking system.

Ever read any Depression-era commentators talking about the use of margins in the stock market? Some of them were equally passionate in their condemnation of that very high-risk practice, which contributed greatly to the Crash. Bunch of doom-sayers, eh? Oops, guess not, since they were commenting on actuals, not forecasts.

-- Mac (sneak@lurk.hid), October 29, 1999.

Well unless Mr. North has a plan to insitute in leiu of the fractional reserve banking system I suggest he leave it alone. You don't throw the baby out with the bath water after all.

(I shudder to think what a Fundamentalist like him would consider a better plan).

-- (_@_._@_._._(*&^%), October 29, 1999.

I just KNEW it!!! You let one of these pathetic polly trolls rant long enough, eventually it starts frothing about Gary North. LOL!

I'll bet this troll has read ALL of Gary's wacko books. Bet it even frequents a certain web site where his PICTURE is prominently displayed!

Look, can't you find somewhere else to idolize your hero? All we really care about are Y2K issues, not religous stuff.

BTW, Gary North's topics today REALLY ARE INTERESTING, about how in Canada they might impose a cash withdrawal cutoff date of December 8th. MAYBE it's time to WITHDRAW LOTS OF CASH OUT OF THE BANK. Hopefully, you won't BRING DOWN THAT THAR FRACTIONAL RESERVE BANKING SYSTEM. (Sorry, couldn't resist. The polly trolls REALLY hate that...)

-- King of Spain (madrid@aol.cum), October 29, 1999.

Yeah, like thread started by "god's little sheep." Aren't any of these bible thumpers aware of the insult in that appellation? (Even though it really fits them?)

-- A (A@AisA.com), October 30, 1999.

Wow, a lot of vehemence yesterday! College classes must of let out early. Doesn't seem to be much critical thinking from the trolls today.

Seems that the trolls are only using their OPINIONS, not facts, to try to make their points. "This is my OPINION, so I MUST BE RIGHT." Duh! Try facts and logic little trolls, your opinion is only worth what everyone else's is. Try using your personal experiences to help promote your opinion (don't include drug-induced experiences, isn't applicable to real-life anyway).

Little trolls, you want facts? Go to the Senate's Committee for Y2K and read their 100-day report. Read the Executive Summary (will need Adobe Acrobat), especially check out pages 4 and 9.

http://www.senate.gov/~y2k/documents/100dayrpt/

Take a look at what firefighters might be facing:

http://www.iaffhazmat.org/html/y2k__preparedness.html

Or the different ways that embedded chips may affect us IF they aren't found or corrected. (Please note, some of the fixes are actually advice, not fixes themselves.):

http://www.iee.org/2000risk/Casebook/eg_index.htm

Now, THESE are FACTS! Ball's in your court trolls, do you have the guts to respond intelligently?
