Y2K Ads Hit the Airwaves - (STATEWIDE) -- Texans are beginning to hear and see ads urging them to be ready for Y-2-K. Texas Railroad Commissioner Tony Garza says the goal is not to cause a "potential panic," but to make sure Texans are ready to deal with all possible problems caused by the "millennium bug." The ads urge Texans to take simple steps as the new year approaches, like preparing a readiness kit, and withdrawing only the amount of money needed for a holiday weekend. The ads will feature well-known Texas comedians Joe Sears and Jaston Williams.

Linkmeister: I have not seen anything in the Dallas Morning News or Fort Worth Star-Telegram up to this point. Nor has anything been shown on TV that I have seen. I must admit I couldn't read the morning news this morning because the paper was soaked!!! Was I ever happy! We received 2" of rain. I had to throw two buckets of sand in my neighbor's face to revive him from the shock.

Haven't seen anything yet up here in the Panhandle, Linkmeister. Will report back if/when, and what kinda reactions from my DGI friends

Nothing like that here, Linkmeister. Neil: Isn't this rain GREAT? My tomatoes are coming back (after the drought) and I'm going to plant more beans and peas when the rain stops....maybe lettuce and spinach also...to go with the tomatos.

I DID see a lifesaver commercial that said that the pineapple flavor was NOT Y2k compliant. [to quote Dave Barry: I am NOT making this up.] They even gave a number to call expressing recommendations on what they should do.

I caught the tail end of a radio spot on one of our local stations Tuesday Oct.26, it was about 9:30 pm. I haven't heard another one. What I heard was not to panic, just be prepared.

Dallas/North Texas area here.....heard nothing to this effect. Everyone still incredibly blissfully unaware of anything to this effect.

LOVE the rain! We needed it. Now it needs to stop today so that the kiddos can go trick or treating tomorrow night. Nice temps, too, huh?

On a side note, scouted out a great bug out location for the family last night (in the dark, no less). Went for a walk with a maglight and one of those whistles around my neck that would bust your eardrums (just in case). Found a great wooded stretch of land just 1/8 of a mile north of our house, easily reachable on foot, if need be. There are some small houses on the other side of it, but it is pretty big. Found a nice big clearing--didn't see any evidence of people hanging out there like empty beer bottles, fast food trash, etc. Could easily pitch the camoflauge (sp?) tent in there if we absolutely needed to. The lines of the wooded area are pretty thick, but once you get in there, it isn't too bad. Don't know who owns the land, we'd only be going there in a dire DIRE emergency (house is burning, no emergency services working, AND streets and highways are jammed with people, AND general unrest going on). Otherwise best case scenario is we stay in the house.

IRONY:

I heard a radio ad from Texas 2000, and the DPS (Dept. of Public Saftey), while sitting in my car, waiting for Sam's to open this morning!

It said that afterall, it was only another day, and not the end of the world, so get a little food, water, say 3 day's worth, don't fall for any Y2K scams, and oh, yeah, don't take any money out of the bank.

(got a little more at Sam's than I'd intended to)

Howdy--

Anyone got a station that these are running on in Dallas?

I wonder if the comedians are going to assure the viewer or listener that trains won't fall out of the sky.

I listen to talk radio stations almost EXCLUSIVELY, and I live in the Dallas area.....haven't heard those Y2K ads you mentioned!

Here's how another state is planning to handle its Y2K ads:

'Don't Panic' Contract Awarded - (BOSTON) -- The Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency is planning to spend 200-thousand-dollars on an ad campaign designed to prevent Y-Two-K panic. The Rendon Group, whose owner reportedly has ties to Governor Paul Cellucci's administration, will produce the "Don't Panic" ads. The state originally intended to spend 60-thousand-dollars for radio ads, but the Y-Two-K ad campaign has now been expanded to include other forms of media.
