Moderator, catch this one's address FAST...

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

On the post below claiming that Michael Hyatt's site is up and running, you will find that NEITHER the new address given NOR the supposed hot link are actual. When you bother to go to the hotlink, eagerly thinking that this is true, you find the creature who posted it calling Hyatt's site a "pigfarm." The address might just lead you to the original sick hacker. This one's just as sick, if it isn't one and the same!

WHY is there SO MUCH garbage here lately?

I have just come from the Michael Hyatt site and it was up and running. I even posted with no problems. I accessed it from the link below. When I tried to go directly to it, the letter is still posted. However, when I hit the refresh button nothing happened. Could the hacker be back? Loon is a respected member on the board and would have nothing to do with such trash.

How do you do a WHOIS on an ISP? Thanks.

-- Carlos (riffraff1@cybertime.net), November 04, 1999.

Carlos,

Try these two sites:

WHOIS

http://www.geektools.com/whois.html

and... ISP Latitude/Longitude on the Earth (Does not handle .mil domain):

http://cello.cs.uiuc.edu/cgi-bin/slamm/ip2ll/

Um, Anon, no offense, but unless you are pretty loaded with money, you may want to be a little careful playing cyberdetective - the poster could be spoofing the IP, in which case your posting the individuals name and telephone number and claiming "This is some info on the person(s) who did it: (No joke)" could land you in court.

Since you obtained the IP and obviously have administrative priviliges to this forum, it shouldn't be hard to find out who YOU are (a court order to Greenspan would do).

I really think you guys should be careful, you may be going after an innocent person.

Regards,

The link posted http://www.michaelhyatt.com/cgibin/ubbcgi/Ultimate.cgi?action=intro&By passCookie=true is correct - itgoes to Michael Hyatt's forum.

The hot link directly below it posted by hot@link.net is FAKE - it goe to the DeBunky threads!

When I cut and paste from the LOON post, I got the correct site...

Tracing someone via a IP address doesnt get you much. If it is a dialup and the IP is dynamically assigned then that IP is only valid for tha duration of that call. The next person to dial in who needs to use that IP address will get it. You would have to contact the ISP and ask them to tell you who was on that particular IP at that exact time LOCAL to them. Most ISPs wont give you that info without a request from the police, due to legal ramifications.

If it is a static IP it can be behind a proxy or even spoofed.

-- hamster (hamster@mycage.com), November 04, 1999.

If the IP was spoofed then that would be the place to start. But yes, that is ONLY CONTACT info, I should have been clear.

There is a power higher than that of man, I will be judged by Him.

Btw, you don't need any special privledges to look this stuff up. It's all out there for free for anyone who knows where to look.

Why is Old Git allowed to constantly post private information here....and more importantly, why do the moderators leave it?

I seem to recall an incident a few months back where someone posted Chuck's personal information. The outcry on this forum was very loud.

Why the double standard?

Would any of YOU like it if I hacked this system and started posting the IP's of every poster?

Some of you give out enough personal information that you could be tracked down easily.

If I posted, say, Lisa@work.now's home phone, address, place of business, and e-mail address.....would that be O.K? OF COURSE NOT! What about Diane J. Squire?

You should stop this posting of private info....even cross-posting of IP addy's from other boards.....people post THERE knowing that the IP is visible....it doesn't mean they want it plastered all over the internet.

Show some backbone, moderators.

-- Knock It Off (U@y2k.kooks), November 04, 1999.

Chill out.

Sheesh!

(Sysops n Moderators are NOT glued here 24/7... contrary to popular opinion).

Also since Phil Greenspuns been tinkering, it will take a while for the snip to take effect.

The original post to Michael Hyatts Prep Forum DOES work (bit slow though)... hotlink...

DeBunky... Knock It Off (U@y2k.kooks) Y2K Pro... quit playing games! Man you guys are acting like juveniles!

"Y2K Pro... quit playing games!"

Which games are you referring to Squire?

-- Y2K Pro (y2kpro1@hotmail.com), November 05, 1999.

Knock It Off, has a point.

All this tracking and hacking crap is stirring up a real hornets nest, and I have a bad feeling that someone's gonna get hurt. ALL of the people, who are spurring on this particular sh*t storm, are not going to be able to escape their share of responsibility, for the damage.

Just a word to the wise.

"Why is Old Git allowed to constantly post private information here....and more importantly, why do the moderators leave it?"

I DO NOT post private information here, neither occasionally nor constantly. You must have me confused with Doc Paulie who allows all IP numbers to be openly displayed on his public forum, entitled "Debunking Y2K." You must also have me confused with Paul Davis who posted here not too long ago the information necessary to use the WhoIs facility for identifying the source of IP numbers. I suggest you take up your complaint with those people. You can reach them at:

-- Old Git (anon@spamproblems.com), November 05, 1999.

Diane, I am glued here 24/7... actually 9-5, 5 days/week.

Gimme the keys, or at least the ability to change the intolerable troll posts to white.

The trolls wouldn't have enough time IN THE DAY to recover from that.

Also, the trolls know I have no fear of anybody knowing who I am. Comes with being on the light side. Too bad they must live in fear.

They're not men. Just spineless wimps.

Y'all have a nice day!

-- lisa (lisa@work.now), November 05, 1999.

GAWD, what is that Squire bitch yapping about now? "debunky"???? what the hell does that mean....

Why do you call everyone "y2kpro" [everyone you don't like]?

-- make some (sense@would.you.bitch?), November 05, 1999.

"Debunky" is the cute little name given by its proponents to "Debunking Y2K." URL is above. Do go visit, I'm sure they'd love to have you.

-- Old Git (anon@spamproblems.com), November 05, 1999.

Poor empty-headed Lisa. She's just desperate to silence those of us who aren't part of the Cult. Why is that do you suppose?

-- Y2K Pro (y2kpro1@hotmail.com), November 05, 1999.

Actually, Y2K Flo, you wouldn't be on the hit list.

Idiot that you are, you are rather polite and charming.

SO! Didya catch where most of Europe is closed to air traffic for the month of January?

You aviation people really seem to have a grip NOT. Good going!

-- lisa (lisa@work.now), November 05, 1999.

Old Git:

You HAVE posted some misleading information a few times, and I (for one) got bit by it. Since I've never had a problem with you personally, I had to check out why you included me in a list of people who had engaged in a thread on Debunkers regarding something about Nazis. I saw my name (both first and last) included here on TB2000. Since I'd never engaged in anything of the sort, I checked and learned that my post had LED to a discussion of something about nazis.

-- Anita (notgiving@anymore.com), November 05, 1999.

Lisa

Read this slowly so that you can understand. The FAA is an American organisation. They are responsible for American airspace. Not Uruguay - not Africa. Now read this twice, then give your tiny head a shake. OK? Now its time to go ask your mom to unplug the computer.

-- Y2K Pro (y2kpro1@hotmail.com), November 05, 1999.

Anita, I was accused of giving out private, not misleading information here--there's a difference. If you will provide URLs for the "misleading information" to which you refer, I shall be happy to review the posts.

-- Old Git (anon@spamproblems.com), November 05, 1999.

Old Git:

If I had to research EVERY unfounded negative thing folks on this forum said about me, it would be a full-time job. My strengths include ignoring such things. I wouldn't have brought it up now had not the topic included your crosspostings.

-- Anita (notgiving@anymore.com), November 05, 1999.

Anita, if you can't give a URL, please refrain from making accusations. You can't expect me to explain or apologize if I haven't the foggiest idea what you are talking about.

-- Old Git (anon@spamproblems.com), November 05, 1999.

O'd Git

You apologise?
