So what you really want to know is what can you feed these lil guys to fatten them up befoe you slaughter them. For shame, PETA has been alerted!

Go to your nearest farm cooperative and get cracked corn in 50lb bags. You can also get rabbit pellets too

Rabbits have delicate stomachs and cannot throw-up so:

Be careful in changing their diet. It is quite okay to give them the same food on a continouos basis. Rabbit pellets from feed store is formulated to provide all essential nutrients for rabbits.

Our rabbits love papya tabs - it helps reduce any hairballs that could choke them. They also like Timothy Hay more than alflafa.

A good med for a rabbit that doesn't eat or has loose droppings is called Petromalt also available from feed store.

Papaya - it contains a helpful enzyme.

Take it from a guy that raised rabbits for meat and paid his way thru nursing school with them. DON'T feed them exclusively on corn. They die.

Spend your money on a rabbit concentrate, store it in 55 gallon drums with oxy removers and relax. You would have to add so doggone much stuff to supplement the corn, you would have far more time and money involved than it is worth. Also be careful of feeding too much greens at one time. You'd be surprised how fast a rabbit can dehydrate and die from diarrhea.

OBTW. My wife and I had over 1200 breeding does and shipped about 750-900 5 lb meat rabbits to Canada and New York about every three weeks.

I'm thinking of setting up a few hutches myself. What breeds are recommended for meat production (and are hardier), please? What is an acceptable price for non-pedigreed rabbits, please? A good starting amount for my family, 1 buck & 3-4 does?

Thanks!

We have one pet rabbit. I nick named it fatass for very obvious reasons. It loves pizza and dark ale. She hates pale ale though. I don't think she has ever eaten rabbit food. Just whatever we throw its way. Potatos, pizza, vegetables, spicy beef jerkey, you name it. She's alive and well. :-)
