tt - CUDDLUPPY - re govt and other yokels

tt - I can't give you anything that's absolutely guaranteed, but here are a few thoughts:

1. Put the absolute most valuable stuff into a length of pvc pipe, glue ends on it with pvc glue, and bury it in the ground. If you don't want to dig a REALLY DEEP hole, either use short lengths or bury it horizontally.

2. Put the most valuable stuff into a brick-lined hole in the ground, and make a concrete lid on it that looks like a stepping stone.

3. Pray like crazy! I remember reading a book called God's Smuggler by "Brother Andrew" about smuggling Bibles into communist countries when the iron curtain was still firmly in place. He described instances where he was stopped at checkpoints with his back seat full of Bibles in full view, and he had prayed for God's protection and apparently God blinded the eyes of the soldiers, because he was repeatedly waved through without anything being confiscated. I believe that everything I have is a gift from God - and so in my prayers I ask Him to protect the things He has so graciously given me. I am convinced that God has been helping us to prepare, because I've been able to find stuff and get answers in cases where otherwise I'd never have gotten anywhere.

4. If what you have is taken from you in spite of everything, remember that the only hope any of us have is Jesus Christ. I'm not trying to give you a hard time if you're not a believer, but I honestly can't think of anything else to suggest if you lose it all. I would absolutely HATE to have my stuff taken from me by force after all the pain I've gone through trying to put it together, but I believe that if that happens, I will still be in God's hands. I may die, and I may even die horribly, but once I'm dead, I'm FREE and in heaven because Jesus died for my sins (which have been many, so I'm extremely grateful), and because of my faith in Him and the reality of His sacrifice on the cross and subsequent resurrection I'll go to heaven - on my own I couldn't possibly make it because when you strip me of all that I have or am because of Jesus, I'm not worth much.

I hope this helps. I'll pray for your protection when I pray for my own.

tt - I neglected to mention a couple of other things I'm doing. I'm hiding stuff in plain sight and camouflaging where possible. I have some stuff behind my books on shelves. I hide stuff in the pockets of my clothes hanging in the closets. You might be able to put false bottoms in things like wastebaskets. You could sew some things into the hems of your drapes. You could cut into your upholstered furniture and stuff some things inside there. You could take bottom plates off things like lamps and appliances and store things there. You could put things in old dirty shoes.

Some more radical ideas: If you have exposed batt-style insulation anywhere, you could rip it out and put stuff behind it and then put it back.

If you have any dead air spaces (under stairs, behind a closet or chimney, etc.) you could put paneling over it and even put the finishing strips on it so it looks permanent, but you could put the finishing strips onto the paneling only, rather than actually put the strips onto the wall. Figure out a way to stabilize the paneling, and a way to pull it away from the wall when you want something.

Cut holes into your drywall and drop stuff down inside.

Another thought is that you could "ransack" your own house - in the rooms at entrances (maybe only your living room would be necessary), throw a bunch of stuff on the floor, stir it up, and make it look like someone has been there already and taken whatever was worth taking. If you can't stand such a thought, you might put together a mess in your yard - go to a junk yard or someplace where you could get some old and broken stuff and strew it around your yard and front porch.

These might be extremely dumb ideas, but who knows.

Obviously there are limits to some of these - it would be rather tricky trying to drop a 5-gallon bucket down into the space behind the drywall. But you could drop a roll of quarters (wrapped in alum. foil) there if you wanted to. Of course, you'd have to mess things up a bit getting it back out! And for heaven's sake, if you do something extreme, be sure and make a note somewhere (even mental) of exactly where you've done it!

I think I've read too many spy novels. ;-)

god bless you. thanks so much for your thoughtfulness. yes, i have been a christian since i was a teen. god has been so incredible in literally leading me to prepare step by step and also passing along the message to others. my first step in preparing was to get back in his "circle of blessing" as i call it by getting my moral and spiritual life in order (e.g. i ended a three year relationship with an unbeliever which was tough--ah, not great loss, he would have made me protect him anyway!). i wasn't going to risk having anything get in the way of my hearing his direction or opening myself up to unnecessary problems because i was being disobedient.

hey, i figure i have done what i can do for preparations and what i feel the lord has been leading me to do and now it is up to him. i know what you say about brother andrew's story. read steve farrar's book "spiritual preparation for y2k crisis" AWESOME too when you see how god provided for the pilgrim's miraculously. he is good.

i firmly believe the first few months may bring about big communications disruptions so sometime in the middle of december i am going to suggest we create a prayer list of folks (anyone who wants to be included) where we all pray for one another every day at a certain time. i am doing one with my family and friends too. i hope you will be on the list too.

PTL that you're a Christian! I haven't read Steve Farrar's book but I've heard him on a couple of radio shows.

How about we go ahead and start a new thread now for the prayer list? Are you willing to give a first name? It would be easier to pray for people by name than by initials, but if you don't want to I can pray for you by initials.

Wow! Peg, I thought I had dropped in on a Civil War time zone. Sounded like what the Southern ladies did when they heard the "damn yanks" were headed their way. LOL
