Paging MUMSIE - and radiation poisioning question

Mumsie - if you still check in here, please tell me about your trip to Mexico to buy prescription drugs...what city was it...how did you know where to go...etc.etc. Also, I looked at the older post categories and was unable to find links from which to go and purchase the iodine based drugs to prevent radiation poisioning(or at least help prevent it). Can anyone give some direction on this subject? Taz, I believe you said you bought enough in bulk to even give it to your animals. How would you decide what dosage to give? Thanks for any help on this subject!!

Forgot to ask about this: I understand there are two different types of iodine drugs to prevent the radiation sickness. Which is the best for general use? Thanks in advance!!

check out

www.tacda.org

they have an online catalog for blocking tablets and other goodies.

Note that either potassium iodide or potassium iodate if taken prior to exposure to radioactive iodine will prevent damage to the thyroid gland. Neither compound prevents "radiation sickness" as such, they just protect the thyroid gland by preventing the absorption of radioactive iodine by the gland. Potassium iodide solutions are extremely bitter, and many folks cannot swallow this. I suggest Cresson Kearny's great book "Nuclear War Survival Skills" for information on radioactivity, shielding, and such. The half life of the longest lived radioactive form of iodine is 8 days, so that one needs to take the blocker dose for days to weeks.

If you go and read http://www.greenspun.com/bboard/q-and-a-fetch-msg.tcl?msg_id=000oYq http://www.greenspun.com/bboard/q-and-a-fetch-msg.tcl?msg_id=000q7O http://www.greenspun.com/bboard/q-and-a-fetch-msg.tcl?msg_id=000vKF http://www.greenspun.com/bboard/q-and-a-fetch-msg.tcl?msg_id=000vD4 http://www.greenspun.com/bboard/q-and-a-fetch-msg.tcl?msg_id=000v59 http://www.greenspun.com/bboard/q-and-a-fetch-msg.tcl?msg_id=000puv You'll be totally up to speed on matters nuclear. If you want some shorter texts go to http://home.earthlink.net/~kenseger/surv/surv.htm and if you are worried about the taste problem, go the pill route, but shop around for prices.

Check www.ki4u.com for good potassium iodide/iodate info.

P.S. Radiation sickness is nothing more than free radical overdose, just like a hangover. The right amount of Vit. A, E, C, selenium, and other free radical quenchers can vastly reduce (by about a factor of three) the effects of radiation produced free radicals.

Ken, In re. radiation sickness being similar to free radical overdose, I question that. Do you have a web link we can check out? The way *I* understand it is that free radicals take electrons and weaken cells. Radiation zings through, knocks off electrons, etc. (maybe that is the similar part) but also damages dna, etc. by impact. The difference being that the vitamins sacrifice themselves to the free radicals that are present. The vitamins can't take the "radiation bullet" for the cells if they aren't in the way so to speak.

Thyro-Block can be purchased for under $6 at www.beprepared.com

Hi Jeanne! Libbyalex sent me the link for this thread. :0)

I went to a couple different pharmacies, one in Tijuana and one in Rosarita. Take a typed or clearly written list. Someone usually speaks decent English, but the visual helps. You can go into any pharmacy at all, and just ask for your Rx's. Antibiotics usually come in bottles of around 100 tablets. Silvadene is a great buy there. Forget trying to bring back anything of a narcotic nature, unless you bring an empty (current) prescription bottle from the States in your name. You could have them fill that, and should be no problem then. Get up to maximum of three of whatever kind per adult, have it bagged accordingly (so that if inspected it will be kosher per adult), keep receipts. When asked what we had to declare, I just started listing off the souvenirs which were strewn around the car. They just waved us through then. It was sort of the don't ask/don't tell for me, ha ha. If they had looked or asked, fine. They are mostly concerned with illegals being smuggled across. I heard one agent remark to another..."That man looks like he's thinking, 'Please dont' look in my trunk." The three of each kind can also mean different dosages of the same thing, like three bottles of Cephalexin 250 mg. and three bottles of Cephalexin 500 mg. etc.

I'd go soon though, because I just heard a rumor that the laws may change soon about travel and purchases across the border. Not sure if it's true or not, but better safe than sorry I guess.

Best wishes jeanne! My email is real if you have any other questions.

Hi again,

Here are two links for potassium iodide and iodate, and the last link is an information link about it.
