Chevron Disclaimer

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

Chevron expects that after the date rollover at the end of 1999, customers will not only be able to get fuel for their cars, but will also have the convenience of paying for it with their Chevron credit cards.

"Safe Harbor" Statement under the Private Securities Litigation Reform Act of 1995: Statements in this web page regarding Chevron Corporation's business which are not historical facts are "forward-looking statements" that involve risks and uncertainties. The information in this web page is based on Chevron's current expectations, estimates and projections, which could ultimately prove to be inaccurate. Because of uncertainties, the actual effects of the Year 2000 issues on Chevron may be different from the company's current assessment. Factors, many of which are outside the control of the company and that could affect Chevron's ability to be Year 2000 compliant by the end of 1999, include: the failure of customers, suppliers, governmental entities and others to achieve compliance, and the inability or failure to identify all critical Year 2000 issues, or to develop appropriate contingency plans for all Year 2000 issues that ultimately may arise. The foregoing disclosure is made pursuant to the Federal Year 2000 Information and Readiness Disclosure Act.

I just pulled this off of the Chevron web site. If they have so much confidence that we'll be able to get gas, then why the long disclaimer??? I suspect they are not as confident as they think. Do you think oil is the weak link in the chain??

Well, a lot of this is just lawyer overkill.

Corporate lawyers have a lot of power, and they pretty much do whatever that have to do for their clients. Actually, I think this disclaimer is pretty simple compared to others I have seen.

The insert we got with our Chevron bill awhile back, said "Your bill may be non-existant, but we expect you to keep a tally of your purchases and mail us a check anyway". (paraphrased)

yeah rite -- dream on!

Sigh. Everyone is doing it, this is just more complete than most. The UK government funded Y2K advisory body has a disclaimer saying "this does not constitute legal or PROFESSIONAL advice" (my caps). Sigh.
