What are the execs at NBC thinking about

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TimeBomb 2000 (Y2000) : One Thread

Can someone tell me what the execs at NBC are thinking about. We have all this talk about nothing is going to happen come Jan 1 and not to panic. But what do they do? They are going to air a made for TV movie called Y2K The Movie. For the people that are worried about what might happen, this movie will be their nightmare come true. Can this be in a way a prelude as to what we should expect and they are using this as a forum to let us know without getting in trouble from the Fed. Govt for letting this "cat out of the bag". I say watch the movie and whatever the disasters associated with this movie, at the very least double that.

It's Y2K: Year To Kill the "gobmint" is worried about. You can't see it on t.v., cable, or in a theater.

Yeah Paula. I got me a copy from Amazom.Com. $19.95 from the zStore! Should arrive by next week. Great "documentary" from what I hear. (BTW, I MIGHT be willing to make a few copies... wink wink)

This is just a guess, but I'm almost certain they're thinking about.....

MONEY!!! CASH!!!! GREEN BACKS!!!!

But I could be wrong. they could have some altruistic motive.

Naaaaaaaa..... It's the money.

Aren't you finished with your preps?

No. NBC doesn't care what we know or what we think about Y2K as long as we watch the movie. That's all that matters.

I say watch the movie and whatever the disasters associated with this movie, at the very least double that.

LOL, the movie supposedly contains a few massive power outages in major cities, multiple plane crashes, and at least one nuclear meltdown, all within a few hours after midnight. Go ahead and double that if you like.

Midnite's still workin on them preps...(down to 42 and a wakeup there Paulie!!)

Isn't this network owned by GE?

True. Except for the plane crashes. And the power outages are treated as no big deal, even though the entire eastern seaboard went dark, from Virginia to Canada. No riots or looting.

You guys won't like it much.

Pointed out on another thread was a very important point regarding the new commercial they are using showing Clinton giving his "everything is OK" speech.

If they were approaching this from a purely ficticious viewpoint they would use the words...

"What if he WAS wrong?"

But instead they are using the words...

"What if he IS wrong?"

The present tense of that statement clearly indicates that they are indeed implying that the events of this movie could represent the possible outcomes of our real-life predicament, even though they plan to use disclaimers to the opposite effect (for legal reasons).

This is the first time in the history of television that I am aware of, that a disaster movie is being based on an actual real-life event that is DEFINITELY going to happen and there is now way to avoid it. The only thing that remains to be seen is whether the real outcome will hold true to the movie, and as we have seen so many times in the past, life often IMITATES art.

BTW, for those who have not yet seen that commercial, they are airing it during prime time on NBC, between 9 and 11, but usually only once. It is a real classic, in fact I think I'm going to get that one on tape for the history books.

Declan,

Is it true that the King of Spain is played by Antonio Banderas, and the pivotal role of Red seeing the light will be portrayed by David Caruso?

That's one epic battle I might be inclined to watch.

Paula,

Is that your review on Y2K "Year to Kill" at Amazon?

-- bing (2plus2@four.com), November 19, 1999.

flora

I'm sure lil' Queenie is portrayed by none other than PeeWee Herman.

Given their history, Ol' PeeWee won't have to rehearse too much for this role.......

Bailiff?!? Whack his peepee!!!

Sorry sir, he's beating me to it as we speak........

Deano,

You two make a great team as the contemporary version of "The Bickersons". Thanks for the entertainment.

Did you catch the recent Vanity Fair interview with Pee Wee?

-- flora (***@__._), November 19, 1999.

flora

You gave me a good laugh, thanks!! No, I missed the PeeWee article.

Not really a fan, just trying to use my best guess on what the Queen is probably most like in real life. PeeWee always comes to mind first.

Again, thanks for the chuckle!

My take on the Y2K movie, if it's not just an obvious attempt to grab some ratings, is that by showing "the worst that can happen" and making it clearly fictional, the movie will convince even more Americans that in *reality* there is nothing to worry about.

However, there may be a War of the Worlds effect, and it may at least increase Y2K preparedness awareness, so the panic buying may begin very soon. I wish I had the money to complete my own family's preparation plan. (Over the last year we have gradually accumulated some food stores including the dirt cheap rice&beans strategy and have been filling up dozens of milk jugs and 2 liter bottles with emergency water.)

Back to the movie, no one really believes that an asteroid/comet will strike the earth and cause a major catastrophe, so Deep Impact/Armageddon didn't stir up fear. Likewise, Independence Day didn't provoke panic over alien invasion.

Ironically, it is inevitable that one day, Earth will be impacted by a devastating object, and we're way overdue. With all the cosmic oddness going on ("Earth Changes"), I would not be at all surprised to see an impact in the next few years, even.

For more about meteor type impacts, see the sites http://enterprisemission.com and http://millengroup.com

Can't speak for the Alien Invasion theory's likelihood, although some paranoids believe that the govmint will simulate an alien attack in order to bring about global unity. Both Reagan and recently Clinton have semi-joked about the possibility for global unity if we all had a "common enemy" to defend against.

For more on that type of stuff, see http://sightings.com

Charles,

If they are trying to say that there is nothing to worry about, then why would they put that statement in the commercial..

"What if he IS wrong?"
