Minox 35mm Viewfinder

Minox 35mm viewfinder has the following property

  • The width of object field is approximately equals to the distance of the object to the camera, because the frame width is 36mm, and the focal length of lens is 35mm. For example if your distance scale on Minox 35mm camera is 6 feet, then the width of field is about 6'.

It has another 'property' too: I cannot see the meter unless I take off my glasses and even then I can hardly make out the pale grey needle. I find it quite an effort. Is this normal or should I get my GT cleaned?

Ray, the viewfinder of my GT-E is clear and the needle is clearly visible.

    Martin,

Perhaps I should add that the camera appears to be brand new, even though I realise it can't be - the GT model must be at least 15 years old? There isn't a mark on the body or the lens. Functioning seems perfect, although I'll find out a bit more today when my first film is processed. The viewfinder appears to be clear enough, it's just that the meter scale is at the extreme right hand edge of the finder and the needle does not stand out clearly, i.e. it doesn't contrast well, being a kind of dim grey/pale black. the figures on the meter scale (500 125 30) are also rather dim. I can see it, but not easily. Is it just me, is it typical of the 35 GT camera, or is there a need for a CLA, do you think?

    Regards, Ray

Ray, As long as the exposure is not under or over, or too slow, you really don't need to know exactly where the meter is-- it is not that critical anyway.

Service Minox camera is quite expensive unless you really want a CLA.

If you do, then you can check out the Minox repair thread in "Repair" and look for DAG-- Don Goldberg, in canada go for Kindermann.

Mind you the price of a used camera plus service charge of CLA may be more than the price of a new GT-E martin

    Martin,

I've now got back my first film and it's a cracker! Every good thing I've read and heard about the Minox 35 GT is true! As you say, you don't really need to be able to see the meter all the time - and, anyway, I think it must have been my fault that I couldn't see it very well, because when I looked again this morning it was quite clear.

So, I'm a happy camper - but I'd be an even happier one if my Leica Mini Zoom hadn't started playing up (I apologise for going off-topic for a moment). In the last 2 films I've exposed with the Mini Zoom, the right half of every print is invariably good but the left half is blurred and exhibits apparent flare. I don't know whether it's a light leak at the film window (where you can see what kind of film is in the camera) or a dislocated/deformed pressure plate or some other gremlin. I need to do some experiments to find out. It just goes to show that I should have bought a Minox instead of the Mini Zoom in the first place!

    Regards,
